Louisville Sluggers at Cincinnati Kids, Game Three                    September 28, 1009

Mike Scott (15-14) vs. Mike Cuellar (12-14)

Series tied at one game each.

Mike Cuellar looks comfortable in the first and retires side easily allowing only a wlak to Josh Gibson.

Mike Scott, on the other hand, struggles out of the box.  Paul Molitor leads off with an infield single and John Henry Lloyd triples him home to open the scoring.  After Joe Dimaggio walks, Scott settles down and he strikes out Bill Terry, Mickey Mantle, and Reggie Jackson in succession.

Cuellar cruises through the first three innings.  Cincinnati threatens again in the third when Molitor leads off with a single and Joe Dimaggio does likewise creating 1st and 3rd with one out.  But, again, Terry and Mantle strike out to end the threat.  Scott has 7 strikeouts in three innings and looks dominating, though behind 1-0.

In the visiting 4th, Cesar Cedeno leads with a triple and scores one out later on Babe Herman’s sac fly to left.  Score is tied now at 1-1.

With two outs in the 5th, Buck Leonard drive the ball over the right-center wall for a go-ahead homerun.  Cuellar has given up two hits: a triple and a homer.

In the bottom of the 6th, Bob Boone takes one for the team and reaches first via HBP.  He looks injured and Cool Papa Bell come son to run.  Bell takes third on Molitor’s third hit of the day.  Mollie, however, is caught napping off first as Scott picks him off.  Bell’s on third with one out.  JH Lloyd singles him home to tie the game at 2.  Dimag walks and that brings up Terry for the third time with a chance to advance the Kids’ cause.  This time he delivers with a tremendous 2-run triple over the head of Cedeno in center.  Mantle and Jackson strike out and the inning ends with Cincy up 4-2.

After and out, Cedeno walks and Gibson rolls one down to Lloyd at short.  He boots it for a two-base error.  Men on 2nd and 3rd, with just one out.  Babe Herman immediately ties the game with a single into center, scoring both runners.  Bansk singles and Klu pops out.  Frank Howard single to center . . . here comes Herman, testing Joe D’s arm . . . it’s not even close!  Babe is out by 5 steps and the inning ends with the score tied at 4.

Frank Baker, Cincy 3rd baseman, open the home 6th with a single and advance to second on a wild pitch.  Sam Crawford singles to right and scores Baker easily.  Randy Myers comes in for the Sluggers; he’s been very effective in the post-season.  Carlton Fisk, the new Kids’ catcher, singles down the line toward Ken Boyer who, in an attempt to make a great play, throws the ball away, creating a 2nd and 3rd scenario with nobody out.  Though the Kids do score a run on a sac fly, the damage is minimal.  Kids up 6-4, with 3 innings to go.

Ken Boyer atones for his error with a 1-out homer cutting the lead to 6-5 in the 7th.  Sparky Lyle comes in for the Kids.  Can he get the team to the 8th or 9th with the lead??  He retires Eddie Collins and Cedeno on long, uncomfortably long, flyballs.

After Terry singles in the home 7th, Mantle and Jackson strike out yet again and the Kids do not score.

Lyle pitches to Gibson in the 8th.  He hits a long flyball to left center . . . Dimag gives chase . . . he’s got it!!  Once again, Lyle serves up a screamer and his outfield saves him from disaster.  In comes Phil Regan to try to get the final 5 outs.  He retires Herman and Banks to end the inning without incident.

In the 9th, Klu flies to right for the first out.  Frank Howard singles to short and Lenny Dykstra comes on to run for him.  Buck Leonard comes up now . . . he hits a screamer into right-center, nobody can get to it, it rolls to the wall scoring Dykstra and putting Buck at third!!  Tie game, 6-6!!  Boyer pops out and Collins Ks, so it’ll go to the bottom of the 9th with the score even.

Willie Hernandez comes on for Louisville, replacing the increasingly impressive Randy Myers.  Dimaggio slices a single to right to open the 9th.  Bill Terry steps in and works the count to 2-0 . . here’s the pitch . . . it’s deep to right . . . it could go . . . IT’S GONE!! A 2-run, walk-off, homer by Bill Terry gives the Kids the game by a score of 8-6.  Cincinnati now leads the series by a 2-1 margin, with 2 more games at home . . .
