Cincinnati Kids at Louisville Sluggers, Game Two                      September 26, 1009

Mort Cooper (12-11) vs. Don Newcombe (17-16)

Paul Molitor takes Don Newcombe’s first pitch and sends it deep to left for a towering homerun; that might jump-start the Kids!  In the Cincy second, Reggie Jackson singles and moves to second on a wild pitch.  With 2 out, Bob Boone delivers Jackson with the second run of the game; just like yesterday, the Kids have scored in each of the first two innings.

After three innings, Mort Cooper has yet to allow a baserunner.  Cincy leads 2-0.

In the home fourth, however, Eddie Collins leads off with a single.  Though erased via double play, the Sluggers manage to load the bases with two out.  Up steps Ernie Banks . . . here’s the pitch . . . it’s an easy play at third for Frank Baker.  Banks is retired and the lead holds at 2-0, Cincinnati.

Bob Boone leads off the 5th with a single, his second hit of the day.  Molitor sacrifices him to third, but the bunt is so good that he makes first on it.  He immediately steals second and the Kids are threatening: 2nd and 3rd with nobody out.  John Henry Lloyd grounds out with the runners holding.  Joe Dimaggio produces a sac fly to left field, scoring Boone.  Bill Terry lines a hard single to right and Molitor scores easily.  It’s 4-0, Cincinnati.

In the 6th, Reggie leads with a single and is sacrificed to second by Baker.  With 2 out, Bob Boone produces his third hit of the day, scoring Jackson and removing Newk from the game.  Tom Glavine comes in to stem the tide.  He strikes out Molitor to end the inning, but the Kids have picked up one more run.

Meanwhile, Cooper suffers little as he keeps the Sluggers scoreless through six innings.

Successive single by Lloyd and Dimag off of Glavine give the Kids another golden opportunity.  With no outs, they have runners at the corners and Terry, Mantle, and Jackson coming up.  Terry delivers a sac fly to right for a run and Mantle and Reggie fail to do any damage.  It’s 6-0, Kids, after 6-1/2 innings of play.

In the home 8th, Lenny Dykstra and Eddie Collins single with none out.  Up comes Cesar Cedeno . . . it’s deep to left, going, going, gone!!! A 3-run homer which cuts the lead in half.  But wait . . . Cooper is calling to the dugout.  It looks like he strained his back on the pitch . . . he’s coming out of the game.  That’s too bad for Cincy and Cooper, but in comes Phil Regan, the surprise ace reliever for the Kids this year.  He came out of the bullpen crew to be the temporary stopper when Sparky Lyle was injured early in the year.  He went on to save 5 games in 5 tries and never relinquished the role all year.  He finished with 31 saves and a 1.70 ERA!  He’ll need to get 6 outs to tie this series.  Let’s see what happens.

He strikes out Josh Gibson but gives up a homer to Babe Herman to cut the lead to 6-4 with 1 out in the 8th.  He gets out of the 8th without any further damage.

Clem Labine comes on in the 9th for Louisville.  Max Bishop, subbing for Molitor defensively at second, works a walk.  JH Lloyd singles him to second and the Kids have one more threat.  A Dimaggio single loads the bases.  In comes Jack Morris in relief of Labine.  That’s the wrong answer!  Bill Terry lines a tremendous shot over the head of Dykstra in center . . in comes Bishop, here comes Lloyd, and now, here’s Dimag steaming around third headed for home . . . THERE’S NO THROW!  A 3-run double makes the score 9-4, Kids!

In between some harmless outs, however, the Kids have worked two walks to load the bases yet again, this time for Boone, who is 3-4 today.  He hits it on the nose, but right at Ernie Banks to end the inning.  We go to the bottom of the 9th and the Kids have a 5-run lead.

Regan retires the Sluggers in order and the series is tied at 1 game each.  Cincinnati wins Game Two, 9-4.
