Carl Mays (16-13) vs. Whit Wyatt (21-9)
Two of the all-time CPBA pitching grand-masters
will hook up
this evening in
Paul Molitor gets things going right away off of Whit Wyatt with a double to center field. After an infield out, Joe Dimaggio delivers Molitor with a single right past Wyatt into center. Kids up 1-0.
In the home half of the 1st, Cesar Cedeno walks and moves to third when Babe Herman singles to right. With 2 outs, Ted Kluszewski steps in . . . and he grounds harmlessly back to pitcher Carl Mays to end the threat.
In the Cincy second, Frank Baker doubles and moves to third on a slow roller to the infield. With 2 out, Carlton Fisk increase the lead to 2-0 when he singles past second baseman Eddie Collins. Molitor follows with a single; Fisk stops at second. John Henry Lloyd works a walk to load the bases for the red-hot Joe Dimaggio. Wyatt ends the inning by inducing a grounder back to the mound.
In the Louisville second, a walk, a wild pitch and 2-out single by Lenny Dykstra (starting in place of the injured Carl Furillo), cuts the lead to 2-1. Eddie Collins singles and Cesar Cedeno doubles both runners home to put the Sluggers ahead, 3-2. Josh Gibson singles to center and Cedeno comes around to make it 4-2. Herman singles to put runners at 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. Carl Mays doesn’t seem tired, but he’s not fooling anyone right now. He stays in to face Big Klu . . . who blasts a home run into deep right, to score the seventh runs of the inning. The Sluggers have just put on a clinic this inning. In comes Sparky Lyle to end things. He gets Ernie Banks to pop to short and we go into the third inning with the Sluggers up 7-2!
The Sluggers pick up insurance runs and the Kids,
with the
help of an error, put one more run on the board in the 6th. Wyatt is excused for the day, mostly to rest
for the possibility of three starts in 9 days.
As the game heads into the home 6th, it’s
The teams trade runs
until the game
ends with
