September 22, 1009     Milwaukee Frosties at Cincinnati Kids   Game Six

Nolan Ryan (10-13, 4.04 ERA ) vs. Bullet Joe Rogan (8-13, 5.91 ERA)

Do or die game for the Frosties who will go with Bob Lemon tomorrow, should Ryan win today.

The Frosties make out in the first and the Kids immediately touch up Ryan for a single and stolen base (both courtesy of Paul Molitor) and a double by Joe Dimaggio to open the scoring.  Bill Terry follows with a single to score Dimag and make it 2-0 after only one out.  Mantle forces Terry but then steals second . . . Ryan is very poor at holding runners.  Reggie singles to score the Mick; make it 3-0, Cincy!  Reggie immediately steals second but gets picked off there by a clever Ryan toss.

In the second, Frank Baker doubles to lead off and scores when, with 2 out, Paul Molitor singles to left.  Mollie steals second . . . which proves to be wasteful, since John Henry Lloyd deposits a homer into the rightfield stands.  That will be all for Nolan Ryan, who had pitched so well earlier in the series.  In comes Frank Tanana to hold the fort.  He retires his first batter to end the inning with the score Cincy 6, Milwaukee 0.

The Frosties combine three hits, a walk, and a DP to score on in the third, but Jackson’s 3rd homer of the series, with one aboard, wipes out that gain to make it 8-1, Cincinnati.

In the visiting 5th, two walks and a single load the bases for the Frosties with only one out.  Rip Collins pops out and Mel Ott taps the ball back to Rogan for a routine play.  But Rogan drops the ball and the second Milwaukee run scores.  Charlie Keller strikes out to end the inning and the threat.

The Kids come right back and a Reggie single (Mr. October??) scores Dimag and puts Mantle on third.  In comes Al Hrabosky for the Frosties.  He Ks Baker and Sam Crawford to end the inning.

In the 8th, Rogan begins to tire and gives up a couple of hits and a run and in comes Sparky Lyle for Cincinnati.

The score sits at 10-3, Cincinnati, as Lyle takes the mound to begin the 9th.  The Kids are all but assured a spot in the CPBA World Series.  Here’s Earl Battey, in for Milwaukee.  He’s had a fine series subbing for the injured Mickey Cochrane.  He grounds out to Lloyd at short.  That brings up Edd Roush who has three hits today. He grounds out to Baker at third . . . looks like Lyle’s slider is really cutting downward today.  One out to go and in steps Robbie Alomar, who’s also had a fine series for the Frosties.  He walks to bring up Rip Collins, switch-hitting first baseman.  He blasts one well into the cheap seats for a 2-run homer.  That cuts the lead to 10-5 . . . ominous or harmless??  Up steps Mel Ott . . .he lifts a lazy flyball to Mantle in right . . . he’s under it, he’s GOT IT!  THE KIDS ARE IN THE WORLD SERIES!!!
