September 20, 1009 Cincinnati Kids at Milwaukee Frosties                  Game Five

Mike Cuellar (12-14) vs. Bob Lemon (23-11)

Series tied at two, this will be last game at Milwaukee in this series, possibly this year.

Lemon gives up two hits but no runs in the first.  Frosties come to bat . . .with no action.

In the Cincy second, Reggie Jackson walked to open the frame and Frank Baker singled him to third.  Sam Crawford stepped in and blasted a double to center, scoring both runners and giving the Kids a 2-0 lead.  Paul Molitor walked and a wild pitch sent him and Crawford up a base.  Now, with two out, John Henry Lloyd steps in . . . he doubles to center scoring both and the count goes to 4-0, Kids!  Lemon looks like he’s struggling . . . he walks Dimaggio and in steps Bill Terry the slugging firstbaseman.  He flies out and up comes Mickey Mantle, the Kids’ right-fielder.  He singles and in comes Lloyd with the 5th run of the frame.  Milwaukee stays with Lemon for now . . . Reggie returns to the plate as the Kids have now batted around.  Jax singles to right, scoring Dimaggio and sending Mantle to third.  That’ll be all for Lemon, who’s just got to be disappointed in himself.  In comes Claude Osteen to put out the fire.  He gets Frank Baker to sky to Roush in center . . . a can o’ corn . . . but Roush loses the ball in the sun! A two-base error puts men on 2nd and 3rd with 7 runs in this inning!  Crawford pops out to first to mercifully end the carnage.  After 1 and a half innings, it’s Cincy 7, Milwaukee, zip.

In the Frosties’ third, an Alomar double, Roush single and an Eric Davis single scores one run with one out.  Rip Collins then blasts an opposite field homer to cut the lead to 7-4, Cincy.  Mel Ott singles and after an out, moves to second when Harlond Clift walks.  Dobie Moore singles to right scoring Ott and making it 7-5.  Earl Battey flies to Dimag to end the inning.

Osteen pitches beautifully into the fifth but then tires with one out and one on.  In comes Ron Davis for the Frosties.  He gets Carlton Fisk to ground into a DP to end the inning.  It’s still 7-5, Kids.

In the bottom of the 6th, Alomar singles and Eric Davis does likewise and, with one out, the Frosties have men at 1st and 3rd.  Rip Collins steps in . . .but wait, the Kids are changing pitchers.  In comes Sparky Lyle to try to quell the uprising.  Collins drives it to deep center, Dimag can’ get to it, it rolls to the wall . . . Alomar scores easily, Davis is churning around third and coming home, here’s the throw from Joe D. . . . HE THROWS IT AWAY AND RIP COLLINS COMES ALL THE WAY AROUND TO SCORE HIMSELF!  Milwaukee grabs the lead, 8-7!!!  Ott and Charlie Keller make outs to end the inning but what a turnabout!  The Frosties have erased a 7-run lead!

In the Cincy 7th, Jackson drives a homerun into the rightfield stands with 2 out to tie the game at 8.

In the Cincy 8th, Paul Molitor opens with a stand-up double.  In comes Frank Tanana for the Frosties.  Frank has had an off year, but with all these lefthanders in the lineup, he’s a key man for Milwaukee.  Despite a walk to Bill Terry and a passed ball, Tanana retires the Kids without a run.

Lyle retires the Frosties in the 8th without a threat.

Top of the 9th, Reggie makes the first out but Baker doubles to put the winning run in scoring position.  Sam Crawford steps in . . . he grounds out to Alomar, moving Baker to third with 2 outs.  Fisk up . . . he singles to left, putting the Kids ahead 9-8!  What a clutch hit!  Molitor works a walk and Tanana looks tired!  In comes Al Hrabosky, another lefty out of the Frosties’ pen.  JH Lloyd greets the Mad Hungarian with a double, scoring Fisk and moving Mollie to third.  Joe D. singles sharply to left and that scores both runners.  It’s now 12-8, Kids. Terry singles, Mantle walks, and Reggie singles in another run.  Hrabosky is excused and in comes Jim Brosnan.  He gets Baker on a grounder but the damage is done.  We go to the bottom of the 9th with the Frosties down 13-8.

A Rip Collins HR off of Lyle brings Phil Regan into the game.  He gets two quick outs then develops a blister on his hand . . . he’s coming out and in comes Lindy McDaniel looking for the final out.  Clift singles but Dobie Moore grounds out to end the game.

Cincinnati goes up 3 games to 2 in this best-of-seven series.  What a seesaw battle; Cincinnati survives the loss of a 7-run lead by manufacturing a 5-run 9th inning!!
