September 15, 1009 Milwaukee Frosties at Cincinnati Kids, Game One

Bob Lemon (23-11, 3.68) vs. Carl Mays (16-13, 4.11)

In bottom of first Paul Molitor walks and John Henry Lloyd singles him to third with nobody out . . .Dimaggio, Bill Terry, and Mantle due up. Possible early trouble for Bob Lemon. Joe D. singles to center, scoring Molitor; Lloyd to third. Terry singles to deep short, making it 2-0; Dimag to 3^rd. Up steps Mantle . . . he K’s. So does Reggie Jackson and it looks like Lemon has found his groove. But Frank Baker doubles home 2 runs to make it 4-0. Sam Crawford also doubles and the Frosties are down by 5, at the end of 1 inning!

Teams trade zeroes with no real news other than extraordinary pitching from both Lemon and Carl Mays. Neither pitcher gives up a hit for 3-4 innings. More bad news for Milwaukee though: Mays plunks Mickey Cochrane and he’ll be gone for rest of game and possibly the entire post-season! Mays, a well-known headhunter, has really upset the Frosties with this . . . Quickly, Dobie Moore doubles and Harlond Clift singles home two runs to cut the score to 5-2. But that’s all for the fifth inning.

Again, both pitchers settle into a groove. We go to the 8^th and Milwaukee’s Robbie Alomar leads with a single off of Mays. Rip Collins, Mel Ott, and Charlie Keller, however, leave him stranded and the Frosties’ hopes have diminished.

Lemon retires the Kids in the 9^th 1-2-3 and finishes the night with 6 hits allowed; 5 in the first inning and 1 thereafter!

Earl Battey, catching for Cochrane, leads with a double and when Moore singles him to third to start the 9^th, the Kids call on Phil Regan (5-0, 1.70 ERA, 31 saves on regular season) to close it out. Clift produces a run with a sac fly. Dave Parker skies to Mantle in right, but Edd Roush singles Moore to third with two out. Up comes Alomar representing the go-ahead run . . .and he flies to left to end the game.
