September 20, 1009 Louisville Sluggers at Boston Pilgrims                    Game Five

Whitlow Wyatt (21-9, 3.77) vs. Sandy Koufax (20-13, 3.84, 313 Ks)

A rematch of Game 2 starters.

All’s quiet until the home second when a Honus Wagner single, a Rusty Staub walk, and a John Bench single plates the first run of the game for Boston.  Mike Schmidt works a one-out walk to load the bases for the top of the Pilgrims’ lineup.  George Sisler slams a 3-run triple over the head of Slugger Lenny Dykstra and Boston takes a 4-0 lead against Whit Wyatt.  A single by Ty Cobb scores Sisler and the lead grows to 5.   Cobb makes a break for second and here’s the throw . . . it’s out into center and Cobb scampers on over to third!  The wheels have come off for Louisville here in the second.  Willie Mays singles Cobb home and that will be enough for Wyatt today . . . in comes Danny Graves, who ends the inning without further damage.  6-0, Boston, end of two.

The Sluggers begin a comeback in the 3rd when Dykstra doubles, Eddie Collins triples and Cesar Cedeno scores Collins with a sac fly.  In the 5th, Dykstra walks and Collins hits another triple to cut the score to 6-3, Boston.  Cedeno follows with an RBI single and it’s a 2-run game with only one out in the fifth.  Koufax looks like he’s struggling, but it’s a bit early for the shaky Boston bullpen.  A Josh Gibson triple, scoring Cedeno, convinces Boston to go to the pen nonetheless.  In comes Nellie Briles.  He induces a pop fly from Babe Herman and strikes out Ernie Banks to hold the lead at 6-5.

Johnny Bench provides a bit of a margin with a solo HR to lead off the home 6th.  Tom Glavine replaces Graves for the Sluggers.  Glavine manages to K Mike Schmidt while walking Bobby Grich who proceeds to 2nd on a wild pitch and to 3rd on a passed ball.  Grich then scores on a slow roller to Banks, who chooses to get Sisler at first.  The inning ends with Boston up by 8-5.

After retiring seven batters in a row, Briles offers up a single to Cedeno and serves a gopher ball to Josh Gibson.  The lead is now just 8-7.  A Babe Herman single inspires Boston to bring on Derek Lowe to try to get into the 8th inning with the lead.  BUT ERNIE BANKS HAS OTHER IDEAS! He strikes a 2-run, go-ahead, homer to left as Louisville takes the lead 9-8!  OH, DOCTOR, what a comeback!

Al Simmons singles in the home 7th and Louisville brings on Randy Myers.  Can they get themselves to Willie Hernandez??  Myers retires the next 3 Bostonians to move the game into the 8th with the Sluggers ahead by 9-8.

In the Louisville 8th, Ken Boyer works a walk and Dykstra goes against “the book” shunning the sacrifice.  His solution?  A triple down the right-field line for immediate insurance.  Hoyt Wilhelm replaces Lowe for the Pilgrims.  Collins singles through the drawn-in infield to make it 11-8, Sluggers!  Wilhelm induces a DP and a groundout to escape any further damage.  Boston is down to just 6 outs.

But the Sluggers are not quite done . . . in the top of the 9th, light hitting Ken Boyer produces a staggering 3-run homer that follows two walks with 2 outs, and the Sluggers take a commanding 14-8 lead.  Pilgrim elimination is all but assured; the Sluggers look ready for the first World Series appearance!

Myers stays on in the 9th and, though George Sisler leads with double, the rest of the inning is without trouble.  The Louisville Sluggers do, indeed, advance to the CPBA World Series, eliminating the perennial powerhouse Boston Pilgrims.  The CPBA is guaranteed, for the first time, to produce a champion this year that will not be a franchise from the Original Six as Boston was the only representative from that group to make this year’s playoffs.
