September 19, 1009 Louisville Sluggers at Boston Pilgrims, Game Four

Jack Morris (6-8, 6.75 ERA!!!) vs. Dwight Gooden (13-13)

Opening frame is quiet but in the top of the second, Buck Leonard jumps on a Doc Gooden fastball and scores Ted Kluszuewski and Carl Furillo in front of him with a 3-run homer! Sluggers up 3-0 with a chance to take a dominating position in this series.

Boston’s 2B Bobby Grich answers with a tremendous 2-run homer to center field, however, in the bottom of the second, cutting the lead to 3-2. And the game is tied when Willie Mays leads of the fourth with a HR over the Green Monster in left field.

The teams trade zeroes until Klu opens the 7^th inning with a blast of his own, putting the Sluggers up 4-3. Later that inning, Furillo injures himself; he may be out for the remainder of the post-season!

Honus Wagner begins the home 7^th with a double to center. He is stranded as the Pilgrims fail to get the ball out of the infield.

Paul Lindblad replaces Gooden after 2 walks in the 8^th. Neither team scores in the 8^th and the game goes into the 9^th inning with the Sluggers up, 4-3.

The Sluggers do not pick up an insurance run and they bring in Willie Hernandez to close it out in the 9^th. He gives up a single to Sammy Sosa but ends the inning easily. The Sluggers win and take a 3-1 series edge, riding an improbable Jack Morris victory over Doc Gooden.
