September 18, 1009 Louisville Sluggers at Boston Pilgrims, Game Three

Louisville jumps on top right away when a Cesar Cedeno walk, a Josh Gibson HBP, and a double over Willie Mays’s head by Babe Herman lead to a 1-0 lead. Ted Kluszewski grounds to second, scoring Gibson and making it 2-0.

In the third, Eddie Collins singles and is delivered by a 2-run Josh Gibson home run. Cicotte looks hittable today; his knuckleball doesn’t seem to be dancing.

Gibson, in particular, seems to be able to time the flutterball; his second HR in the 5^th makes it 5-0 in favor of Louisville. When Herman follows with an identical shot to left, Cicotte is replaced by Nelson Briles. Klu doubles, Banks singles and Furillo walks to load the bases against Nellie. Buck Leonard, however, grounds into a DP to end the inning. It’s now 6-0, Louisville.

The Pilgrims respond with a sign of life in the bottom of the fifth when SS Honus Wagner’s triple is followed by Johnny Bench’s HR, cutting the lead to 6-2. The pilgrims couple two more hits and a ground out in the 6^th to make it 6-3.

Banks and Furillo single off of Briles to begin a threat in the visitors 7^th. Derek Lowe comes in for a fresh arm. He walks Leonard and serves up a Grand Slam to Ken Boyer pushing the score to 10-3, Sluggers.

Newk brings it home easily as the Sluggers go up 2-1 in the series.
