September 16, 1009     Boston Pilgrims at Louisville Sluggers, Game Two

Sandy Koufax (20-13, 3.84, 313 Ks) vs. Whitlow Wyatt (21-9, 3.77)

A match-up of two of the all-time CPBA greats.

George Sisler and Willie Mays single to create a first-and-third situation with 2 outs in the first but Sammy Sosa strands them.

In the third, Sisler singles and scores on Ty Cobb’s double to center.  Boston up, 1-0.  Centerfielder Cesar Cedeno throws out Cobb at the plate on an Al Simmons single.

Bottom third, Ken Boyer singles to right and Eddie Collins duplicates feat, making it first and third with nobody out.  Cedeno, Josh Gibson, and Babe Herman to follow . . .Cedeno pops out but Gibby follows with a tremendous blast to left field for a 3-run homer.  Louisville goes up, 3-1.  Koufax escapes any more trouble in the third.

In the home 4th, however, Carl Furillo leads with a double and walks to Frank Howard and Boyer load the bases for the Sluggers’ top of the lineup.  Collins scores Furillo with a single.  Cedeno walks in Howard and the Pilgrims bring in Nelson Briles to try to get out of this jam . . . so much for the anticipated pitching duel!

Briles, remarkably, retires Gibby, Herman, and Banks in order without a ball leaving the infield.  Though his ERA this year was a horrid 9.14 in 42 innings, Briles has long been a key man in the Pilgrims ‘pen, one year making the All-Star team as a middle reliever.

Briles retires 7 more in a row until Babe Herman doubles with 1 out in the 7th.  In comes Paul Lindblad, as Briles looks tired.  He commits an error, gets an out, then pays for his miscue by giving up an RBI single to Furillo.  Louisville goes up 6-1 after 7.

Wyatt steams home under cruise control and finishes his start.  Sluggers tie series at one game apiece.
