September 15, 1009     Boston Pilgrims at Louisville Sluggers, Game One

Tex Hughson (16-10, 4.36) vs. Mike Scott (15-14, 3.54)

Babe Herman homers after a George Sisler error puts Josh Gibson on with 2 outs (Boston had committed only 93 errors all season).  Louisville up 2-0.

Ernie Banks leads of 4th with a solo shot.  Sluggers up 3-0.  Willie Mays throws out Furillo at plate to end the Sluggers’ 4th.  Lead holds at 3-0.

Mike Scott gives up infield hit to Honus Wagner to start Pilgrims’ 5th.  No advancement as Boston goes meekly.

Mordecai Brown relieves Hughson who is injured and lost for 15 days.  Bad blow for Tex and the Pilgrims.

Sosa reaches on an error to start Pilgrims’ 7th.  Wagner singles him to 3rd with none out.  Up comes Bench (35 HRs, 105 ribbies on the regular season) . . .Single, scoring Sammy and sending Honus to 3rd.  Pilgrims’ are rallying.  Bobby Grich up . .  and he tags it, deep to left, going, going, GONE! A 3-run homer which puts the Pilgrims up 4-3!  Clutch hit against a tough pitcher.  Scott stays in to face Mike Schmidt, famed for being very destructive in these big post-season games.  He K’s but Sisler works a walk and the Sluggers bring in Danny Graves to try to end the inning. He’s facing Cobb . . .who singles setting up first and third, yet again.  Al Simmons steps to the plate . . .deep to center, could it be???? No, it stays in the park, but it’s deep enough to score Sisler and put the Beantown Boys up, 5-3.  Willie Mays steps up . . .he singles and Cobb stays at second.  Sammy returns to the plate and he grounds out to end the 5-run inning.

In the home 7th, Buck Leonard and Eddie Collins single for Louisville, and with one out, they have first and third with Cesar Cedeno, the Sluggers’ CF, up against Brown.  He pops out to Sisler and Josh Gibson K’s to end the threat.  Boston 5, Louisville 3 after 7.

Wagner triples off of Graves and Bench scores him on an infield grounder, making it 6-3, Boston.

In the bottom 8th, Herman reaches on a Schmidt error and Ernie Banks hits hit second HR of the day, to deep right, closing the gap to 6-5.  Furillo immediately doubles and the Pilgrims go to their bullpen to get their famed closer, Hoyt Wilhelm.  Wilhelm has had his worst season ever (just 24 saves based on a 5.19 ERA), but he is a clutch pitcher.  He’ll need to get five outs and Furillo is standing on 2nd with the tying run. Buck Leonard flies to left, but Larry Gardner, pinch-hitting for Ken Boyer, works a walk, bringing up Eddie Collins (.321 on the year) to the plate.  Wilhelm induces a groundout to Wagner and we’ll go to the 9th with Boston ahead by one.

Sisler singles off Graves, who is replaced by Tom Glavine, who throws three straight force plays to end the Boston 9th.

Bottom of 9th, Louisville needs a run to tie.  Wilhelm to face Cedeno, Gibson, and Herman.  Cesar lines to second, one away.  Gibson walks.  Babe Herman skies to Willie Mays in center, bringing up Ted “Typo” Kluszewski, the muscular first baseman.  He singles, sending Dykstra, running for Gibby, to third!  Two out, tying run on third in the bottom of the 9th and up comes Ernie Banks.  Banks swings . . and pops it up to Honus Wagner.  The Boston Pilgrims take the first game of this best of seven series from the Louisville Sluggers 6-5.
