NATIONAL LEAGUE: The 1988 New York Mets - The 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers

GAME ONE AT BROOKLYN: Carl Erskine vs. David Cone

     After 8 innings, Carl Erskine has shut out the Mets on 1 hit and the Dodgers have a 2-0 lead.  But in the ninth, Darryl Strawberry leads off with a home run and Kevin MCReynolds follows with a triple.  A sac fly by Howard Johnson ties the game.  The Dodgers don't score in the bottom of the inning.  In the 10th, the Mets immediately put men on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out.  But they come away with nothing.  A 2-run shot by Roy Campanella wins the game for Brooklyn.
GAME TWO AT BROOKLYN: Russ Meyer vs. Dwight Gooden

    An early 1-0 lead by the Mets is extended to 4-0 in the fifth before the Dodgers even get their first hit.    A later Strawberry shot makes it 6-0, and the Mets cruise to a 6-2 win to even the series.
GAME THREE AT NEW YORK: Bob Ojeda vs. Billy Loes

     Down 4-3 in the bottom of the 11th, the Mets rally to score a run.  But the Dodgers score twice in the 12th and hold the Mets off to take a 2-1 lead in the series., 6-4 Dodgers.
GAME FOUR AT NEW YORK: David Cone vs. Preacher Roe

     Outfielder George Shuba's homer in the fifth give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.  In the 8th, they extend the lead to 2-0.  But the Mets get to Clem Labine in the bottom of the 8th for 4 runs, and Randy Myers closes the door as the Mets even the series at 2 apiece.
GAME FIVE AT NEW YORK: Dwight Gooden vs. Johnny Podres

     Backup catcher Barry Lyon, subbing for a tired Gary Carter, drives in the Mets first 2 runs off lefty Johnny Podres.  A bases-load walk to Strawberry make it 3-0.. The Dodgers rally for 4 in the eighth to take the lead.  And Ben Wade takes care of the Mets in the bottom of the ninth to take a 3-2 series lead back to Brooklyn.
GAME SIX AT BROOKLYN: Carl Erskine vs. Bob Ojeda

     Keith Hernandez's 2-run shot put the Mets up 2-0 in the first.  Brooklyn gets 1 back in the second and tie it up 3-3 in the third.  Snider hits his first series homer in the 4th to put Brooklyn ahead 3-2.  A Dodger error helps the Mets score 2 in the sixth to go ahead 4-3.  But Campy ties things up with a homer off Roger McDowell in the bottom of the sixth.

     In the 7th,  Strawberry hits a blast off Erskine to put the Mets ahead again 5-4.  In the Eighth, the Mets load the bases with nobody out.   Wally Backman hits a sac fly to give the Mets a 6-4 lead, but that's all they get.  Things fall apart for the Dodgers in the top of the ninth, as the Mets rally for 5 runs to extend their lead to 11-4.  Sid Fernandez closes things out easily as the Mets force a Game Seven.
GAME SEVEN AT BROOKLYN: Preacher Roe vs. Dwight Gooden

     And the Dodgers score two quick runs in the bottom of the first.  An error by Greg Jefferies loads the bases for the Dodgers in the second, and the Duke makes the Mets pay with a Grand Slam!  It's 6-0 Dodgers and it looks good for the reigning NL Champions.

     But the Mets are not down!  They score five times in the third and are right back in the game!  By the fourth, both starting pitchers are out and it is Bob Milliken versus David Cone. And the Mets tie it up at 6 with a sac fly in the fifth.  It's 6-6 and a brand new ball game!

     Jackie Robinson walks, steals second, goes to third on a sac fly and comes home on a sac fly to put the Dodgers ahead 7-6.  But Greg Jefferies has an infield hit in the seventh and McReynolds follows with a 2-run blast that puts the Mets ahead 8-7!

     And Furillo ties it up at 8 with a solo blast in the bottom of the 7th!

     Randy Myers gives up 3 runs in the bottom of the eighth, including 2 bases loaded walks!  And now the Dodgers lead 11-8 and the Mets are down to their last three outs of the season!

    Strawberry flies out!  One away!

    Johnson grounds out to second.  Two  away!  And the Dodgers are one out away from repeating as National League Champions!

     Hernandez singles!  The Mets are still alive.  Gary Carter hits a fly ball to center... Snider has it!  And the 1953 Dodgers defeat the 1988 Mets for the second year in a row to retain their National League Championship and will return to the Super Series with an 11-8 win!

AMERICAN LEAGUE: The 1953 New York Yankees versus the 1948 Cleveland Indians

GAME ONE AT CLEVELAND: Bob Feller vs. Whitey Ford

   After five, the Yankees have only 2 hits, the Indians 10, yet the Indian lead is only 2-0.  Mantle's solo shot in the 8th cut the Indian lead to 2-1. In the ninth, the Yankees get two men on, but Sam Zoldak comes in to pitch to Gene Woodling, and gets him to ground out to second.  The Indians take Game One 2-1.
GAME TWO AT CLEVELAND: Gene Bearden vs. Eddie Lopat

     A Ken Keltner 2-run shot in fourth gives the Indians a 2-0 lead, but the Yanks tie it up by the sixth.  2 separate 2-run rallies in the 8th and 9th extend the Yankee lead to 6-2, and Allie Reynolds shuts things down in the bottom of the ninth as the Yankees even the series at 1 game apiece.
GAME THREE AT NEW YORK: Vic Racshi vs.Bob Lemon

     The Indians score twice in the sixth and stop a Yankee rally in the ninth to win the game 2-1.
GAME FOUR AT NEW YORK: Johnny Sain vs. Sam Zoldak

     The Yankees take an early 2-0 lead that the Indians cut in half to 2-1.  New York nurses that 1-run lead into the eighth, when Yogi Berra's 3-run homer off Satchel Paige opens the game up to 5-1.  They win the game 6-1 to even the series.
GAME FIVE AT NEW YORK: Whitey Ford vs. Bob Feller

     Joe Gordon's solo shot give the Indians a 1-0 lead in the 4th.  A second homer from Gordon makes it 2-0 in the sixth.  But in the bottom of the ninth, the Yankees rally for 2 to tie it.  The 10th is scoreless. 

     Ken Keltner leads off with a home run in the 11th.  In the bottom, the Yankees get men on 1st and 3rd with one out, but Gene Woodling bounces into a double play to end the game.  Cleveland takes a 3-2 lead in the series and are heading back home.
GAME SIX AT CLEVELAND: Gene Bearden vs. Jim McDonald

     By the seventh inning, the Indians have built a 5-0 lead and Bob Feller has baffled the Yanks all game, striking out eight and giving up only 2 hits.  The Yanks get a hit in the eighth, but nothing else.  In the ninth, Gene Bearden is still on the mound.  He strikes out Mantle.  One away.  Berra flies out to left.  Two away.  And the Yankees are down to their last strike.   Hank Bauer doubles, keeping the Yanks alive.  Gene Woodling steps in.  Bearden pitches… squibbler to third… over to first… out!  And the 1948 Indians are the American League Champions for 2005, beating the 1953 Yankees 4 games to 2!
