Architect Louis Kahn and Light Art

The auditorium of the First Unitarian Church and School, Rochester (New York)

Salk Institute for Biological Studies La Jolla (California) 1959-1965

My work with daylight (see Joost van Santen Daylight Art in Architecture) is influenced by the work of Louis Kahn, Architect.

Louis Kahn wrote 'No space, architecturally, is a space unless it has natural light.' So many of his designs start with a study of natural light in the environment. Kahn has written a book 'Light is the theme' about his design of the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.

international Standard Book Number: 0-912804-03-3

In this book Louis Kahn writes:

Silence to Light
Light to Silence
The threshold of their crossing
is the Singularity
is Inspiration
(Where the desire to express meets the possible)
is the Sanctuary of Art
is the Treasury of the Shadows
(Material casts shadows shadows belong tot light)
