DISCLAIMERS

This modpack/scenario used portions of the
Ice Planet Scenario which is owned by Microprose. The Antarctic modpack/scenario, is designed to be played on all versions of Civilization II. It is not my purpose to violate any copyrights or claim ownership to the concept Civilization II or of any of its products, but to use this modpack to encourage the interest and patronage of Civ2 enthusiasts to purchase future Civilization games. This modpack revision has not been endorsed by Microprose in any way, nor have I been commissioned to make it. I will be happy to cooperate with Microprose or its subsequent licensees should they disagree with the methods I have used to distribute this modpack.

I make no promises toward the validity of this modpack. Use of the modpack and any files, utilities, or information within is done at the user's own risk.

INSTALLATION

METHOD 1

INSTALLATION FOR MODPACK MANAGER ONLY

This modpack has been tested with Matt MacLeoad's Modpack Manager, and works perfectly. I highly recommend the Modpack manager when using any modpacks with CIVILIZATION II. Simply create a directory under Civ2 Modpack Manager called ANTARTIC and unzipped the files directly to the ANTARTIC folder/directory.

METHOD 2

INSTALLATION FOR Conflicts in Civilization, Fantastic Worlds or Multiplayer Gold Edition

For users of Conflicts in Civilization, Fantastic Worlds and Multiplayer Gold Edition just unzip these contents into a folder named ANTARCTICA under your scenario directory as you would any other scenario. Keep in mind you to have a separate
folder named SOUND for the sounds.

METHOD 3

INSTALLATION FOR Classic Civilization II ver. 1.08 thru 2.42
REGULAR INSTALLATION

1. UNZIP the ANTARTIC.ZIP file and other zip files for sound (using winzip) to a directory called "UNZIPPED".

2.  GO TO MS-DOS PROMPT FOR WINDOWS 3.x/9x/XP (you may need to restart in MS-DOS mode)

3. TYPE: cd\unzipped

4. At the C:\UNZIPPED> prompt TYPE: ANTARTIC [harddrive letter:] for installation to begin.

For example, if your hard drive is C:, then type:

ANTARTIC C:

5. Follow the onscreen instructions for the install program and you should be fine. Feel free to email me if there are any bugs but it has been tested several times on various machines already without fail.

Note: You must have your Civilization II main files installed under the default folder/directory called "MPS\CIV2" ON THE HARD DRIVE YOU SPECIFY for the installation, otherwise it will fail. If you have other files in the unzipped directory you would like to keep,
move them to ANOTHER directory or this program may delete them!

ALTERNATIVE INSTALLATION 1

WINDOWS INSTALLATION

1.  I have done everything this guy says, but I still can't get the *^&%$@! modpack going!

2. If your handy with windows then you can try this:

STEP 1: The simplest way to install this patch is to create a folder/
directory called C:\ANTARTIC.

STEP 2: Then, create another folder under C:\ANTARTIC called: CIV2.

STEP 3: Then, create another folder under C:\ANTARTIC\CIV2 called: SOUND

STEP 4: Now, copy all your civ files from your ORIGINAL CIV2 directory
files to C:\ANTARTIC\CIV2.

STEP 5: Now, copy all your civ\sound files to C:\ANTARTIC\CIV2\SOUND.

STEP 6: Now, copy all the unzipped ANTARTIC civ files to C:\ANTARTIC\CIV2.

STEP 7: Now, copy all the unzipped ANTARTIC sound files to
        C:\ANTARTIC\CIV2\SOUND.

FINISHED!

ALTERNATIVE INSTALLATION 2

DOS INSTALLATION

In case other installation methods didn't work, and you are saying, "What is he talking about?" and you have an old computer and you are not handy with windows so you normally prefer to use dos...

Hopefully, your hard drive is C, then you could just use these DOS commands at the C> prompt for the steps above if you can't do it in Windows for whatever reason:

Step 1.  md ANTARTIC
Step 2.  cd ANTARTIC
Step 2.  md CIV2
Step 3.  cd CIV2
Step 3.  md SOUND
Step 4.  copy c:\mps\civ2\*.* c:\ANTARTIC\civ2
Step 5.  copy c:\mps\civ2\sound\*.* c:\ANTARTIC\civ2\sound
Step 6   move c:\unzipped\*.wav c:\ANTARTIC\civ2\sound
Step 7.  move c:\unzipped\*.* c:\ANTARTIC\civ2

DONE!

SORRY, BUT NO SUPPORT FOR MACINTOSH AT THIS TIME.

GENERAL INFO

After unzipping, you should have the following main files: rules.txt, labels.txt, (USERS OF FANTASTIC WORLDS SHOULD REMOVE LABELS.TXT IF PROBLEMS ARE EXPERIENCED WITH THE GAME OR LOADING THE SCENARIO) game.txt, pedia.txt, units.gif, terrain2.gif, terrain1.gif, menuloop.wav, people.gif, cities.gif, city.txt, city.gif, icons.gif, and Readme.htm.

This patch contains replacement files for 25 pre-existing files in your Civivilization II directory. You should have a total of 51 files when you unzip compressed files to your scenario folder (INCLUDING SOUND FILES).

**IMPORTANT: Make sure you back up the files before you install this patch into your Civ II directory if you would like to go back
to the original setup (of course, you'll have these same files on your Civ2 CD-ROM anyway!).  This patch is NOT supported by MicroProse, but has been play-tested, and will run without error.

ABOUT YOUR INSTALLATION

If you chose one of the Alternative Methods, I know it is a lot of steps, but I have written this extensive document to help first time users of modpacks/scenarios get it done. I have personally spent way too much time trying to get someone else's modpack or scenario to work just to find out it is for Fantastic Worlds only or it is just a test scenario included from a different modpack. With these alternative instructions you don't have to take the time to back up the old civ and you can even run the program from Win '95/98 desktop if you just create a shortcut. You can now run the ANARCTIC PATCH independently of your old civ and if you don't like it, you can just delete it and you still have your original civ intact!

WARNING

Due to many Technologies, and a few units being "swapped around" in release 1.x of this patch, it is NOT recomended you use this patch with any saved games, unless you want some weird things to happen... (ie: if you are loading a saved game using Any Patch, scenario or any unmoded version of Civ 2, you're not recomended using this patch on that save file).  Either wait till you've finished your current saved game, or dump it and start this patch and a new game right away!

WHAT'S NEW IN THIS RELEASE?

This is version 2.0 and here is the list:

CITIES.GIF
UNITS.GIF
TERRAIN1.GIF
TERRAIN2.GIF
PEOPLE.GIF
README.HTM

These files have been modified in various ways. All gif files except the PEOPLE.GIF have been cleaned up and formatted to Microprose standard. Graphics for "walled" cities in the CITIES.GIF have been improved. The UNITS.GIF file has been reformatted and units "faced" so that as many units as possible face the southeast with Barbarian diplomat faced southwest. This will be my signature standard from this point on. This htm document has been created to make getting help a little easier and visually pleasing. At the bottom of this page are a few links and my Email, along with the news and some other modpacks you may want to try.

PREVIOUS RELEASE NOTES

Well, this is release 1.0, so everything is new! This is a scenario based on Antarctica. Your mission is to conquer the continent or stay alive long enough to establish a new link with a communications satellite.

Also, you are faced with the additional challenge of "isolation" making friends might not be as easy as you had hoped and you also have to worry about the "Antarcticans", a rebel faction that invariably will want to destroy you. It is possible to become allies with any civ if you work at it, but I can't guarantee they will be loyal.

You can research many different technologies and play the "Antarcticans" if you would like.

In the future, this patch may integrate changes to the governments. Later versions of this scenario may also have additional maps to play.

If you have Fantastic Worlds and it doesn't work I have included the Labels.txt I am using for FW named "labels.FW" If just rename the Labels.txt to "labels.bak" and change the rename "labels.fw" to "labels.txt" then let me know if it works. Otherwise, all files should work equally well for all versions.

BETA TESTING UPDATE:

Thanks to the dedication of many testers in the Civfanatics forum, the following changes have been implemented for the initial release of v1.0.:

1. Pioneers have been reduced in movement and no longer treat all squares as roads.
2. Civs are less friendly to each other and to you, so beware higher levels.
3. New graphics were added: Airports, fortification, and Fortress.
4. All text screens that describe the mission are now working.

Otherwise, same great play for everyone who enjoyed testing this work.

ANTARCTICA 2.0

WHAT IS THE ANTARTICA PATCH?

I've always been fascinated with pioneer exploration. Anarctica is one of the last known frontiers left on our planet, and it's potential is awesome. It is an isolated continent, and that in itself makes it scarry. Imagine going to a place where seven months out of the year it pitch black, three months of twilight, and only two months of dull sunlight that is enough to blind you in the icy wastes of a glacier plain. Now, try to survive!

IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING:

This has been playtested with v2.42 rules with units implemented, and plays well.  This patch also runs with other versions of civ2 but not Test of Time.

Of course all concievable actions can't possibly be covered, so if for some reason you find a glitch, let me know and I'll attempt to fix it!  Also, if any ideas or comments on this patch come to mind, let me know, my E-mail address is at the end of this text file.  Not all aspects of the game mechanics could be changed without completely reworking the game code.  Some suggestions you may have may not be possible to implement.

IMPORTANT:

You MUST have AT LEAST version 1.08 of Civ II for this patch to run properly. Versions later than 1.08 of Civ II will all run without error.  If you do not know what version of Civ II you are running, select the "GAME" column from the pull down menu and select "Game Options" (or "CTRL O").  This will list your version of Civ II.  If you need to update your version of Civ II, go to
the MicroProse website at
http://www.microprose.com or on CompuServe go to the Game Publishers Forum, keyword "Go Gambpub." Be sure that you take the time to download the current version of Civ II, so this patch will run correctly.

Do Not use this patch on any saved games, especially from other patches. In the Antarctic Patch... units are swapped around by comparison, and will do strange things to your saved games!  As far as I know, this is only one other Antarctic on the net and I'm pretty sure that none of your saved games would work without making the game crash or doing some weird stuff. If you have some other version than 2.0 or 1.0 at this time, I'm not the AUTHOR! Just start a new game, or wait to install this patch!

CREDITS:

Special thanks to Microprose (FW) whose Ice Planet Scenario served as the starting point from which this concept was able to be realized.

Special thanks to Prometeus, often found at www.civfanatics.com who gave me some very useful terrain graphics and ocean graphics.

Special thanks to Frederic Meunie for creating his Moonland v.3.0 modpack, which for me, served as the start for which many terrains were created, as well as ideas and modifications which spawned.

Special thanks to Gohl@upstel.net whose Antarctica map and previous scenario offered a starting point for making this patch.

Special thanks to Steven Strayer for his ReadThis.txt format.

I would also like to acknowledge the many artists whose work that went into graphics that I do not know the names of. I have made every effort to include everyone, but in the course of making this patch, it is possible that I have missed someone. So, if by chance you see anything that even resembles the work of others, please, please email me so that I may include their name for the proper credit!

MARS2! ANCIENT MARS

I'm often called a Sci-Fi modder and that is probably true. When I first played John Posidente's Mars Now! scenario in the Fantastic Worlds add-on, I forgot that feeling of exploration and mystery that returned me to boyhood, imagining the possibilities of being on another planet... Now, I'm writing a scenario that explores a possible event of the red planet--something that you might take on a mission of both discovery and war! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MARTIANS! Find out soon HERE!

CIVCHRISTMAS

Take some time off for a little holiday cheer! If you liked the SANTS'S scenario, then you are going to love CIVCHRISTMAS. Learn about the competition for the Christmas holiday when the north pole finally melts and you have to start your Christmas francise! BETA RELEASED HERE! Check out the details featured on this site HERE!

SID MEIER'S ALPHA CENTAURI for CIVILIZATION II

You might have seen this sticky at the Civilization Fanatics Center Forums. This is a work that has taken a rediculous amount of time to finish but the project seems to keep coming back. It is 70 percent finished and rearing to go! FIND OUT MORE HERE!

LUNAR 2.0

Currently being play tested, this is a massive upgrade from the previous LUNAR 1.0. More scenarios and new units are included. For everyone who has given such good suggestions on the Lunar modpack, the Lunar Mission scenario, and Moon! Scenario, I've decided to make another set of scenarios about the moon. This time you have to have to play 1969 and learn about the real MOON RACE! Find out about it HERE!

NORTH AND SOUTH

Ever since I produced the BIRTH OF AMERICA scenario, I've had an intense desire to produce a civil war scenario. This scenario was 90 percent complete and ready for playtest when most of it was destroyed in the infamous HD crash. Since then, I have managed to scrape together some files uploaded to my old website and on a couple of floppy diskettes! This scenario is back in active production. Find out about it HERE!

THEOCRACY

Ever since I downloaded the game demo for Theocracy in 1999, I've always wanted to make a scenario for this game in Civilization. Unfortunately, the game was never actually released in America and the Demo didn't contain enough of the story line for me to begin the work. Thanks to the magic of eBay, I can now make a scenario that I always to make. Its progress is in very preliminary stages, and categorized only as announced at the moment. Find out about it HERE!

NEWS UPDATE

What happened? You might be asking what happened to some other modpacks and scenarios said to be coming soon and didn't. Here's the scoop!

TRANSPORT TYCOON SCENARIO

Work stopped on this scenario some time in 2002. This is mostly because updating current scenarios took priority, but graphics issues with this scenario because of the strange isometrics in the Transport Tycoon game made further work very complicated. No future plans for this scenario as yet and project scrapped.

CIV II GREATER CIVILIZATIONS UPGRADE!

Work stopped on this scenario some time in 2002 when Civilization III was released. Changes planned and implemented in this scenario seemed miniscual for the work and project scrapped.

VOLCANO WORLD

Work has been suspended due to "lost graphics". Somehow, the underground graphics I was using for experimenting with an underground part of the scenario are no longer on the harddrive...these graphics took three months to create and need to be recreated. No further work expected and project scrapped.

MAD MAX

The modpack is still in limbo. There are a number of undecided situations that have come about that have went unresolved regarding the tech tree. There are new graphics that continue to be added to the folder that holds the unfinished product, but no new solutions to the tech tree at the moment. Appropriate sounds have not been produced. The map to be used for this scnenario was "lost" during a hard drive incident. Project expected to transform into a different scenario.

NATIVE AMERICA

Work stoppage on this modpack has simply went inactive after the creation of the Star Trek Generations package. It's still on the burner as a modpack, but chances are, this mod will actually be changed to a scenario to better represent the Native American situation prior to the discovery of the new world. This is thought to be a better approach to this topic.

FINALLY, I have promised to make scenarios for all of my existing modpacks first that can be played by users of Classic Civ II v1.08 thru 2.42. I am committed to doing this and expect to catch up on these scenarios this summer. There is also the chance that I will convert the Lunar Scenario to ToT. This project has been ongoing since last year (2000) when I got my own copy of ToT.

Anyone who would like to join my efforts and team up on some of these projects is most welcome. I thoroughly enjoy making scenarios and modpacks because I love Civilization!
