Jupiter is big, beautiful and totally cool!

Jupiter, born Champion Beaconwood Misty Blues, or "Misty," is my super cool Cornish Rex cat. The breed is known for their incredibly soft wavy coat, shedding almost nothing, and being highly intelligent. In addition to brains, Misty was so startlingly beautiful when she was born that they made her a show kitten. But she didn't like the life of a beauty queen, and she was no Miss Congeniality.

So instead, she became a professional mother in a very nice cattery in rural Connecticut. There she lived with her mom, her sister, her daughter, her grand daughter, some girlfriends and an occasional male visitor, in a big room that was designed just for cats.

She retired at the age of 8, moved to New York City and into my Midtown apartment. It was her first experience living in a real home. Everything was strange and new. In the beginning, she was terrified of the TV. Now she's a total couch potato. (Well, except for when she's chasing a ball, running laps or climbing her 12 foot scratching post.)

She wasn't used to seeing a person eat, and it took almost a month before she figured out that what I had was food. (I thought she was just being polite.) Now, she's curious about tasting everything. Her favorite fruit is persimmon.

The name Misty was way too common for such a special cat. So I re-named her Jupiter -- partly because she's very big for a Rex, and partly because in astrology, Jupiter brings good things into every house.

To anyone who's wondering about adopting an older cat, I say, "Do it!" It's a joy to live with an older, wiser adult who has already mellowed out. You won't need to deal with a kitten bouncing off the walls. My last cat, Noodles, lived to be 20 -- even a so-called senior citizen can still have a lot of life left in them!
