Brig. Gen. St. John Richardson Liddell (CSA). The grandson of James
Liddell/1712, General Liddell was of the Natchez (Mississippi) Liddells.
He owned a plantation next to the Confederate Secretary of War and later
of State Judah P. Benjamin near Sliddell, Louisiana. He usually
commanded Arkansas troops and was the last Confederate general to
surrender east of the Mississippi River. His final assignment was to
supervise the land defenses of Mobile Alabama. Outnumbered seven to
one, his troops held out for seven weeks in their "sand" forts and twice
repulsed large Union attacks before learning of CSA President Jefferson
Davis' capture in northern Georgia.
