It was Lord Farrquad in the recently released, animated motion picture Shrek, who made me see Hawaii politics with a little more clarity. Farrquad is the evil and arrogant Lord who built a city with gaudy, expensive monuments to himself; drained the common people of their income through exorbitant taxes and spending; intimidated them through the power of his position; and gave loud speeches about his fantastic leadership. Mayor Jeremy Harris has a vision for Oahu and concocted three years ago the idea for "visioning teams," to implement his "vision." These are 19 "community" groups given $2 million each; many which are headed by people who work for the mayor or campaigned for him. Those who win the visioning team consulting or construction contracts, are often former cabinet members or campaign contributors to the Mayor's political campaign. While Jeremy Harris tends to all his fancy projects, hes ignoring the ticking time bomb at scandalridden Ewa Villages. According to the independent auditors KPMG, Harris is: hiding facts from the City Council and the public about the true extent of financial problems at Ewa Villages; using questionable financial assumptions to mask an apparent inability to pay the project debt; and totally unprepared to pay the additional $29 million in general obligation debt, part of the $73 million total that the city owes on Ewa Villages. The Jeremy whos running for Mayor of Honolulu? Or the Jeremy who will run for Governor in two years? The Jeremy who brags about his support for Honolulu police officers? Or the Jeremy who offered police officers a 0% raise for four years and is losing good officers to better pay from Mainland police departments? The Jeremy who first came to Honolulu Hale with the help of his boss, Frank Fasi? Or the Jeremy who turned his back on his boss and betrayed him when he needed help? Jeremy Harris keeps telling us everything in Honolulu is picture perfect. Step back and look at the big picture though, and things look different. He insulted loyal police officers by offering them a pay raise of ZERO. No wonder theyre leaving for fair pay on the Mainland. He let Michael Kahapea walk off with more than $6-million of your money in the Ewa Villages scandal. Hes shown he cant be trusted. Look how he stabbed his old mentor Frank Fasi in the back. And in two years, hes going to run for Governor and stick us with the tax bill for the mess hes created. Fight For Higher Power Unites Opposing Political Camps Against HarrisMalia Zimmerman, Small Business News, September 2000 People from opposing political camps "Democrat and Republican" are uniting against Jeremy Harris, the incumbent in the race for mayor of the City and County of Honolulu... It is widely known that Harris plans to run for governor in 2002. That means, if history repeats itself, Harris will use his political clout as mayor to fundraise millions of dollars for his campaign war chest and recruit contractors benefiting or seeking city contracts to help support him in 2002. The Harris administrations aversion to independent audits and smoke-and-mirrors approach to budgeting clouds the true state of the Citys financial condition... The Harris administration is obsessed, particularly during election-year cycles, with making promises and commitments to fund new projects. |
