| The next morning Justin wakes up in a large, very comfortable bed to the sound of seagulls crying over the ocean. He walks out of the pool house, blinking in the bright sunlight and gets a better look around. There's a big pool in front of him, and a gorgeous view of green hillside with the city beyond and the ocean the other way. He stands there and stares at the beach for a few moments, taking it all in. Wow, people actually wake up to this every morning. After discovering the kitchen in the pool house is empty, except for the liquor bottles in the cabinets, he enters the main house and wanders into the kitchen. When he opens the door hes greeted with a cheerful grin from the cutest little girl.
She was posted up on a stool at the counter eating a bagel while clicking her dangling feet together. She scanned him, inspecting everything about him, finally approving. Good morning. Her eyes twinkled. Good morning, he smiles, Im Justin. He holds out his hand for her to shake. She takes it. I know, Im Jamie Lynn. Nice to meet you. Jamie Lynn directs him to the bowls and silverware and Justin fixes himself a bowl of cereal. So youre from Long Beach? She asks, stuffing the last bit of bagel in her mouth. Yep, born and raised. How do you like the O.C.? Its beautiful, but I havent really gotten to see much of it yet. Jamie Lynn opens her mouth to say something but stops when the kitchen door connecting to the living room swings open. And in walks a brown eyed, blond bombshell. She takes Justins breath away. Hes stunned, his eyes scan her body, pausing at the small area of exposed skin between her pink spaghetti strap and matching sweat pants. Britney is a little taken back when she sees him sitting there across from her little sister. Of coarse she knew hes staying there, but she didnt expect him to be right there in her kitchen, nor did she expect him to be so cute. Hi. He says waiting to hear her speak. You must be Justin. She says and walks over to him and takes a banana out of the fruit bowl in front of him. You must be Britney. The two stare at each other, Jamie Lynn tries to read their expressions, but she cant. She finally breaks the silence. So Brit, you probably arent doing anything today. Why dont you show Justin around. Jamie Lynn says and smiles, Britney gives her a look. Thats a wonderful idea. Lynne says as she enters the kitchen with a purse in her hand. I need to go grocery shopping for dinner so Ill be back later. JL are you ready to go to Kaitlins? Yep. She says and hops off the stool. Alright sweetie, see you later. Have fun today you two. Britney just smiles as her mom and sister leave. Uh, if your busy, or whatever, I can find something to do... Not that he wouldnt love to spend the day with her but he doesnt want to feel like a chore. No, not at all. Well have fun. So, what do you wanna do? What do you do around here? Britney decides to take a drive around Newport, show him some of the hot spots - they end up at the beach. You must come here a lot? He asks as they walk barefoot in the sand looking off at the horizon. Newport is so beautiful. I guess, mostly to tan. Really? I figured youd always be here. He says looking off into the distance. I know I would be. Britney looks at the sand, she knows shes lucky to live in a such a beautiful town so close to the ocean, but he doesnt know what its like here - the drama, the fights, the scandals. Justin notices the row of sailboats docked up on the sand. You ever go sailing? I have been before but not in years. My dads the sailor in our family and hes always too busy. She says sadly. That ones ours actually. She says pointing to the third one in the row. Its a catamaran. You wanna take it out? He smiles. I dont know how to sail well. Her dad never got around to teaching her like hed promised. I do. She looks surprised. I worked at a dock one summer and I met this guy, he needed a hand so he offered to teach me if I helped him out. They spend an hour out on the water. Britney enjoys herself more then she expected. She never imagined sailing would be this fun, it had always been a obligation with her father. But they could have been doing anything short of cleaning public bathrooms and it still would have been fun. Justin is so much fun. A few hours before sunset they decide to head home so Britney could get ready the fashion show. That was fun. She smiles as he hops off the boat as it slides up onto the sand. Yea it was, it must be so cool, you have your own boat to just hop on anytime. Sail away for the day to Catalina. Britney can imagine him just chillin with friends on a boat, shirtless, headed to Catalina. She can see how much he really loves the water and sailing, it made her feel like such a spoiled princess for taking what she had for granted. She feels bad that his life isnt as good as hers, he deserves it more. Yea. She says weakly. I wish we could stay longer, but I really have to get ready. She wants him to stay if he wants to. You can go back out if you want. Its cool, he smiles and holds his hand out to help her off the boat onto the sand. besides I dont know the harbor that well and I might get lost, not that it would be any different from sailing with you. He teases. Britney smiles, she likes how he isnt scared to tell her the truth, and doesnt just say whatever she wants to hear. He doesnt have to try with her, she likes him anyways. Hey. Its not MY fault we didnt have a working campus. They start to de-rig the boat together. Next to them a little bit farther up on the beach next to the other boats was a skinny boy about their age with curly-ish black hair. Justin glances at him, hes rigging up his catamaran to go out. When they are finished and have wrapped up all the sails they still need to push the boat back up on the beach, a task more difficult now that the tide has gone out leaving the dock area farther up the beach. Justin looks at the curly haired boy again, he could tell he was almost done riggin his boat. He walks up the beach towards him. Britney follows. Hi, Im Justin. He says and waited for a response from the guy. He looks up at Justin, a little shocked that anyone is talking to him. Hes use to being left alone, sorta out-casted by society. Plus, no one who goes sailing for the day with Britney Spears would waste a breath on him. This is Seth Cohen, he lives next door. Britney says looking at Seth. Wait, is Seth in the twilight zone? Britney Spears hasnt spoken to him in like ever even though thats how long she lived next door to him. He didnt think she even knew his name, shes definitely never spoken it out loud before. He is getting a little suspicious. Is he about to be the brunt of a cruel prank? He remembers a few weeks ago when some water polo jock corn-dogged him at the bay. Britney is just as curious about Justins motives as Seth is. Well it looks like your about to go out Seth, so I thought if you could help us push our boat up, Ill help you get yours in the water. Uh okay. Seth drops the ropes in his hands and walks down to Britneys boat with Justin. They start pulling it up on 3, I,2,3 They pull. I,2,3 They pull. Britney goes behind it and pushes, but doesnt feel shes even helping. So, whats up Seth. Seth looks at her like she crazy, well she could be, shes talking to him. Why does she care all of a sudden whats up with him. Nothing much. He replies dully and the conversation ends. When theyre done, Britney goes back to bring the car around, an excused she used to get into the warm car. Justin waits for Seth to finish with his boat. He offers his help and Seth takes it. Seth looks surprised that Justin knows what he is doing on the boat, he doesnt know anyone else his age that is into sailing. He realizes maybe theirs more to this guy then he first thought. He just seemed like a typical OC, stuck up, asshole, jock. Seth thinks of something to start a conversation, So, uh, you go to Harbor? Whats that? Seth looks at him blankly pausing. Then smiles for the first time, Youre not from around here. So youre new? Thats awesome, someone that hasnt been raised a pod person. He rambled. Seths got an alert expression and mannerisms that are kind of jerky. He's a little bit geeky, but in an endearing rather than repulsive way and tends to talk rather quickly, especially when hes excited. 10 minutes later Britney walks back down the beach to the boys, their on the boat at the shore now. Justin looks up at her. You ready? She asks. Oh, actually, Im going to go out for a bit with Seth, is that cool? Britney looks at the two of them and a small smile creeps across her face. Aw, were these two becoming friends? How cute. But how weird he found a friend in Seth Cohen, Seth Cohen isnt friends with anybody. Hes always lived next to Britney and never talks to her, or anyone. Yea, of coarse, the fashion show party starts at 6 Ill see you then. She smiles at Justin then looked at Seth. You too Seth, if youre going. Neither one of the boys wants to go to the fashion show, but whatever, they just smile and she walks to her car. Seths catamaran is a little smaller than Britneys but its a lot faster. It has a rainbow colored sail and the name "Summer Breeze" on its side. Seth pulls ropes to adjust the sails with familiarity. Justin is relaxing looking out at the water. I have, um, this plan. Well, I don't-I don't know you'd think but um, next July the trade winds shift west, I want to sail to Tahiti. I can do it in forty-four days, maybe even forty-two. Wow. Thatd be really cool, man. Justin looks at the setting sun gleaming on the water, picturing Tahiti surf. Just catch fish right off the side of the boat and grill them right there. Seth says. Surf when its good. Justin added smiling. But you won't get lonely? Well, I'll have Summer with me. You're going to take this to Tahiti? He says motioning to the boat their on, Summer Breeze. Seth chuckles. Um, no. It's the girl the boat's named after. Justin raises his brow, She must be pretty stoked. Yeah she has no idea. Justin gives him a look. I've never talked to her before. They sail around the harbor for another hour then pull the boat up on the beach. Justin is helping Seth roll up the sails when Sandy Cohen, a shorter man in a suit with a head of black hair and thick eye brows walks down the beach to them. Hes smiling, Hey, fellas. He looks at surprised when he sees Seth with a friend, Hi, Im Sandy Cohen, Seths dad. Justin shakes his hand, Justin Timberlake, Im staying with the Spears next door. Well its nice to meet you. Seth, I thought we'd head over to the fashion show at about 7. Yeah, have fun. Seth says quickly and finishes untying some rope on his boat. Come on. It's a whole new school year, Seth. It's also the same kids, Dad. Why do they even need a fashion show? Everyday's a fashion show for these people. Yeah, well Justin has to go if hes staying with Britney, right? | Hey, maybe Summer would be there. Justin hopes to change his mind. Seth thinks for a moment. That's interesting. She IS Marissa's best friend. He pauses. Seven? Seven. Sandy says. Seven. Seth agrees and starts walking away. Britney stands out on her balcony. She sees Sandy, Seth and Justin walking up from the beach. When she hears the doorbell she goes back inside. She opens the door to reveal a couple guys in suits. Her stomach tightens up; these guys always give her a bad feeling. Hello, again. The man says. My Dad's not here. And when can we expect him? I don't know. The man is unconvinced. Mmm Hmm. Well, then, when you see your father PLEASE remind him again how much we'd like to talk. Let me leave you another one of my cards. He says and hands her a business card, unenthusiastically. Have a good day. Britney closes the door. She looks at the card and it says "Steve Pearlman" and Its from the "U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission", whatever that is. She goes to her Dad's study, near the front door. Inside is her father, Dave Spears. He's an average looking guy with short dirty blond hair but he has a nervous air about him. Hey. Thanks, Kiddo. I just didn't have time to deal with those guys right now. He says casually as he straightens out some papers on the desk. Who are they? Suits. Bureaucrats. The Man. He smiles, but she can tell somethings wrong. But, I mean, everything's okay, right? Yeah, it's just-it's just a thing with uh, a client. Nothing for you to worry about, okay? Britney offers him a weak grin and leaves. She knew there was In the pool house Justin stands in front of a mirror and tries unsuccessfully to tie his tie. Finally he gives up and tosses it on the bed. He just pulls on his suit jacket when there's a knock at the door then Britney comes in. She looks amazing, wearing a cream, loose hanging dress, falling just above her knees. Hey you ready? Wheres your tie? I'm not going to wear one. Open collar - it's a good look. Justin comments, still looking in the mirror. Come on, give me your tie. She says softly, Justin gives the tie to Britney. She moves in front of him. Button your top button All right collar up She starts to tie Justin's tie. Now, the skinny side has got to be shorter than the fat side. She says and pulls an end through a loop. He watches her, trying to relax the butterflies in his stomach. So Justin wonders if he should ask her, Why dont you ever talk to Seth. Seth Cohen... Hes just Seth Cohen. This doesnt satisfy Justin. Hes the weirdo in the back of the class reading comic books by himself listening to his cd player, he outcasts himself. Justin doesnt know what to think, he doesnt know what its like at their school - Harbor. He nods and looks at her lips. They are so kissable. Did you guys have fun sailing today? She says, looking up from his tie. Yea, actually. Were thinking about going for a surf session tomorrow morning. Cool. She smiles, he looks happy. All right. There you go. She says straightening out his tie and looking him over. The suit and tie looks amazing on him, he looks so great. She has to stop herself from drooling. Justin takes himself in as he stares into the mirror. Its new, but a look he could get use to. |
