Question of the Week #6: Recently elementary and middle schools in Japan banned this item....what is it and why was it banned?

The answer is cell phones. The latest cell phones are more than just phones- they have e-mail, and games. Teachers found that students were e-mailing each other when they should have been doing school work! As you can see in the photo, these phones are designed to be attractive to children. By the way, for as technologically advanced as Japan is, internet connections through home computers is not widespread. The latest internet access on cell phones is much more popular (partly because of cost).

The Taylors and the Fathys knew the correct answer this week. Here are some of the other good guesses:

  • Pets
  • electronic toys, such as Gameboys
  • weapons
  • hair dyeing
  • Gameboy where you wear headphones and your thinking controls the game
  • student ranks
