In Japan there are vending machines for almost anything you might need. You can buy hot or cold drinks, noodles, batteries, even pet beetles! Unfortunately they use a lot of electricity since they run 24 hours per day...Japan is testing out solar powered batteries to help conserve electricity.

One of the traditional hobbies in Japan is Bonsai trees. Bonsai trees are regular trees that are specially pruned (cut) and cared for to keep them miniaturized.

In Japan, objects are counted using different sets of words, according to their shape and size. Long and thin objects, like bananas, are counted using different words than the same number of objects that are round, like oranges, or the same number of objects that are flat in shape, like train tickets.

Where else in the world would burglars remove their shoes before entering a house they intend to rob? Japanese people leave their "outdoor shoes" at the door and put on their inside slippers to walk inside the house. When they walk on tatami mats, they wear only their socks or go barefoot. When they go into the bathroom, there are special bathroom slippers.

If you took Japan and slid it directly east around the globe, it would line up perfectly along the eastern seaboard of the United States. Northern Hokkaido would overlap Maine and the Ryukyu Islands would match up with the Florida Keys. This would help you to know the climates of the various regions of Japan.
