Romeo and Juliet Group Project
9th Grade English
Assignment:
In groups prepare and present one act of this Shakespearean play to the class. Be creative, feel free to contemporize the play if you want, but you must keep the original Shakespearean language. You can abridge (shorten) the dialogue, but the language must stay in tact. Please make sure everybody in your group participates. The majority of the grade is individual, but you will still need to work together to get the best possible grade.
1. CHARACTER ANALYSIS (Individual) 50 points possible
Each member is responsible for a one-page typed analysis (300-350 Words). Please follow the American School Standards. The analysis should have a title, brief background information and include:
1. How the character acts, feels, looks, where they live, and how others feel about the character. (20 points)
2) 3 quotes that support your interpretation of the character’s disposition and motivation, and how they are important to the play. (30 points)
2. SUMMARY/EXPLANATION 10 points possible
Each group should have a one-page summary of their act. This summary should be brief, but include all the major events and happenings in the act. Also explain in this summary why you have chosen your particular scene to present to the class, i.e. why is it important to the act? (Summary = 1 paragraph, Explanation = 1 paragraph)
3. SYMBOL POSTER 10 points possible
Each group should work together in creating a poster with at least two symbols from your section. Each symbol should be illustrated and fully explained.
4. QUOTABLE QUOTES 20 points possible
Each group member should memorize one “quotable quote” from their act. These quotes will be recited to the class during presentations. A quotable quote is a famous line that has special meaning even when taken out of context. Also, you need to explain what the quote MEANS.
Example: “The course of true love never did run smooth” (III, ii, 25)
5. POSTER/WALL MURAL/PROPS 10 points possible
Each group should together create a poster or wall mural to serve as a background for their skit. Feel free to use whatever materials you would like. Be creative.
6. SKIT/PRESENTATION 100 points possible
Each group needs to present a 5-10 minute skit from their act. Each group member MUST participate in this skit in some way. You do not have to have the lines memorized, but it helps the quality of your presentation. (If you do a video, make sure you check out the television for the day of your presentation. If the sound quality is bad, that is your fault and it may affect your grade. The summary and the skit can be done on video, but each person is still responsible for reading their character sketch and reciting their quotable quotes to the class.)
