Written Responses:

For each chapter you are expected to write a 1 paragraph response.  I would recommend doing this on computer and saving each entry as you go, but hand-written on loose-leaf binder paper is fine with me, though spelling and grammar count.  Please quote selected passages from the text in your response when appropriate, and be detailed and clear in your writing, highlighting subtleties and fully examining the signifigance of those subtleties.   You can respond to any of the major themes you want, but remember to discuss the following literary elements when appropriate as well:  symbolism, foreshadowing, characterization, vivid imagery, diction, tone and mood. Your response needs to be followed by an open-ended question dealing with what you have written.  The question needs to be one the class would be interested in discussing, one that is well phrased and, if possible, controversial.  Title each response and be prepared to share your question during class.  I will collect the response exams on ________________  and they will be recorded as a “written work” grade.

Discussion Grade:

Each day we will be discussing your questions.  You need to ask at least 3 questions throughout the process and promote a discussion about your question.  If the question “falls flat,” I’ll try to help you if I can.  However, your grade depends on the quality of discussion.  Each discussion question you ask is worth up to 50 points and I will grade them based on the quality of the discussion.  This is a holistic grade and will be recorded as participation.

Vocabulary:

There are 13 sections of reading and you will find that the vocabulary can be difficult at times.  I expect you to create a vocabulary list with 40 words (about 3 words per section) for 2 vocabulary quizzes (20 words each).  These quizzes will be taken on loose-leaf binder paper (you will need to know the word, the definition, and you will need to use the word in a sentence) on the dates I assign and you will have 30 minutes in class to take the quiz.  Chose words that you can’t define using context clues, words that you think would be useful to your writing and speaking in English.  There is a 3rd vocabulary quiz that includes the words in the following list.  Please write the dates for the three quizzes below:
