Art of the 1950's
After World War 2, Americans looked at our country differently. Because

of the new look of the United States, a new art for emerged called abstract

expressionism. Artists displayed personal expression in their large pieces of

art. One museum that became very popular during the abstract expression

days was the New York Museum of Modern Art. It was at this museum

where some of the best expressionists displayed their work. You could find

paintings from Jackson Pollack, and Clifford Still. These artists make up

the New York School. They had their fans, and their haters but they

were mostly popular in New York and the east coast. Artists that did not

believe in the abstract expressionism used a different technique to create

what they call existentialism. African American painters emerged in the

1950s. Some well known black artists were sculptor Charles Alston,

painter Aaron Douglass, and the muralist John T. Biggins. They focused

their artwork mainly on daily life and rituals. They wanted the people to

believe that they were expressing the people.
