A Sample Integrated Unit
Forest Floor Thematic Unit- an introduction
(Unit designed for students 3rd-5th grade)
Using the lense of the natural world, this unit weaves all areas of academics (including art) together in a tight knit thematic unit of study. 

Students will be involved in choosing the dirction of their study, with in guidelines.  If snails interest a student, they will have the freedom to use snails as the context for their learning.  Students will have to make many choices to make during this study, some idividual choices and some group choices and some class choices.  Students will practice good communication and experience place-based education, right outside the school doors.

Unit Overview- in brief
Essential question- How big does something have to be to be important?
Through this question students will become experts on something tiny on the forest floor.  The students will work together to create perameters for the quality of their work which will include:
      1) Regular journaling
      2) Creation of a child's book (writing and illustrating)
      3) Field Guide to the Forest Floor- including scientific and mathematical information
      4) Hosting a final celebration for parents and community partners
