About the Filk Discography

This originally started out as my electronic "filk book." Then I made the mistake of showing my advisor a couple of computer-oriented filks as we were discussing my final project, and the rest, as they say, is history.

The eventual goal for this collection is to be a searchable index of filk albums, similar to CDDB.

Contributors, Acknowledgements, and Kudos

Without whom this website might have eventually been possible, but it would not be as complete or accurate.

• Mary Creasey: First Contributor, and general Filk Information Queen, who typed titles in for two hours in response to my initial Usenet request, and to whom I owe my arm and my leg. (She didn't want the first-born child....) I also liberally raided Random Factor's on-line catalog for information on in-print (or, at least, in stock) albums.
• Kay Shapero: Filk-Mod Extraordinaire, and keeper of the Filkfile Archives and the Filk FAQ.
• Stephen Savitzky: Titles and authors, and he didn't even fuss that I had misspelled his name--twice! (Sorry....)
• Harold Stein: Patient Contributor, and far better at keeping me informed than I am at responding. I owe Harold my other arm and my other leg. (He didn't want my first-born either....)
• Julia West, Robin Holly: More albums and corrections.
• Jim Trigg--correction on a publisher.

Are you going to include lyrics? Chords? Sheet music?

Regretfully--no, no, and no, at least not much.

I'd love to post lyrics and chords here, and maybe even MIDI or ABC files of the music, but that gets into several copyright issues that I don't want to tangle with. Plus which, that would entail several HUNDRED hours of work, typing and formatting all of the files, and would take up too much space for any of the free web-hosts I know of. I know how much space it would take up--on my home computer, I have over 37 MB of filk and related lyrics, midi files, and sheet music, and I only have about ten percent of what I'd like to have.

There are also copyright issues to consider. The only songs that I have clear copyright to are my own.

The Definition of Filk in the Filk Discography

I'm not going to get into the argument over what is filk, and what ain't. For the most part, this discography includes stuff that you might find (or have found at one time or another) at a filk dealer's booth at a con, or stuff that's available from some of the major Filk purveyors, such as Random Factors and Firebird.

Would you put in a link to my site?

I hadn't really planned on a link page, because there are so many wonderful filkers, filk pages, and filk dealers out there that I really don't want to miss any. Your best bet on links is either Kay Shapero's Filk FAQ, Maureen O'Brien's Darn Near All the Filk On the Web, or Sherman Dorn's Open Directory Filk Index. 

Can I copy or mirror your site?

As far as I'm concerned, you can copy this site, mirror it, send the information to the CDDB, or even e-mail it to your in-laws--or outlaws. I place no copyright restrictions on the Filk Discography. The only thing I ask is that you recognize the contributors I mentioned above.
