The fall of organized government has given rise to all powerful corporations, operating for a profit. The only method of interstellar travel, transmission of matter (TransMatt) is controlled by the biggest and most powerful corporation, TTMS.
Human workers have become unionized, demanding higher wages and more rights, which makes the dangerous work of planetary exploration and pacification expensive for the corporations.
The solution: Beta Class Humanoid Lifeforms, genetically modified beings with the qualities of humans and animals, therefore classed as semi-human and unable to join the GWA (Galaxy Workers Alliance). Belonging to the corporation that created them, their value to the corporation is represented by a sum, and by paying this back through completing missions, their freedom may be bought (buy-back).
Their mission is to ‘blind beam’ into orbit around an unknown planet, and assess the planet for resources while eliminating any threats (rival justifiers, native people and alien species). They must survive until they can build a TransMatt station which will bring them home, during which time they are completely cut off.
