FrequentlyAskedQuestions

1. What is Bisque? Bisque is that state of ceramics when a piece has been fired one time in a kiln. In coloration the piece will be white. This is different from the color of a piece of greenware, which usually has gray/greenish tinge to it. Bisque is also harder to break than greenware is, as greenware is still the wet unfired clay piece, and it is possible to break a greenware piece by squeezing slightly when holding it. As Bisque has been fired, it will not break if squeezed slightly. After a piece has reached this stage (Bisque) it is ready to be transformed into a piece of art by painting.

2. What is a Finished Piece? A Finished Piece is a piece of Bisque that has bee painted and sealed. And where necessary or wanted electrical items, such as lights, etc., have been added.

3. What type of paint is used? There are actually several types of paint that can be used to paint on Bisque. The type I recommend however is Acrylic. Acrylic paint comes in a wide assortment of colors, are fairly inexpensive, and clean up easily with warm water. The brand of paint that I use is Crafter's Acrylic

4. Do I have to fire the item? No! If you use an acrylic paint - You Do Not Fire. The piece has already been fired once. That was to take if from the greenware (wet) stage, to the Bisque (dry & paintable) stage. The ONLY time an additional firing is needed is when you use glaze paints. Glaze painting/additional firing is necessary if the piece is going to be used in the kitchen or bathroom. Basically if it's going to be around water and/or food, that then is the time to glaze your piece. If you decide to glaze a piece you will have to locate a nearby ceramic shop that will both sell you the glaze and do the additional firing. I can not and will not accept a piece back for the additional firing.

5. If I see a piece that is in the Bisque section, can I get the piece finished? Or is it available only as Bisque? And Vice-Versa? ANY piece that is shown in Bisque is available as a finished piece. The same is true of the pieces that are shown in the finished pieces sections, they are also available as Bisque. In either case, there will be a price difference, but in most acses both prices are shown. If you wish to Special Order/Custom Order there is no problem. Just drop me an e-mail. Or go to the Order Form and fill out the necessary sections there, I will usually reply within 24 hours, exceptions are during holidays and shows, confirming your order, and in the case of creating a finished piece the amount of time needed to create it, if necessary.
