First Love's Curse
ramblings proceed
the innocence of youth, of isolation, of ignorance.
love at first site, that look in her eye.
laughing together, walking together, the first time together.
the losing of friends, expecting to be with your love tonight.
long walks in the park, constant kisses, deep with passion.
so deep that strangers envy, that an old couple takes notes.
an old couple, first loves, remember their youth.
give advice, advice not understood.
the library in autumn, the leaves turning gold.
mt. washington in winter, snow in the road.
friends in the spring, reunions, goodbyes.
love in the summer, alone, the bed of her youth.
friends, places, careers, what else there might be.
alone, apart, new faces, new thoughts.
new friends, new parties, new places to see.
new money, new work, new reality.
she went to europe, i went to work.
she dances, i build, she explores, i hide.
we talked just the other day. friends. hearts.
she'll always seek, i'll always recall.
together no more, no library, no fall.
first love's curse, friendly advice ignored.
make it, hold on, and always wonder what else there could be.
lose it, let go, and always remember what will never be.
