Biochemical Warfare in Colombia

27th May, 2003

Add to the ongoing aerial spraying of chemicals over Colombian territories in the name of the "anti-narcotics campaign" the future (and most probably already present) high altitude dropping of biological agents or so called "mycoherbicides", and you get a pretty clear picture of what chemical and biological warfare really looks like.

Given the pernicious effects on "non-target-species" of these agents, as well as the irreversible contamination of vegetation and soils for decades, this seems much rather a carefully employed chemical and biological strategy intended to destroy agriculture per se in Colombia (and other countries to follow), than a "war against drugs". Under the pretext of "eradicating illegal crops", we will be seeing this kind of biochemical warfare being employed in countries of US interest all over the globe, not only jeopardizing their (precarious or anyway non-existent) food sovereignty, but rendering them agriculturally completely unproductive, thus forcing them to fully recur to the market to import agricultural products.

Wild speculation (or not that wild in the end?): Some US corporations will gladly (and unsurprisingly) offer their friendly assistance in the form of genetically modified seeds, resistant to the previously and widely sprayed chemical and biological agents in the affected areas. "Round-Up Ready Fusarium Oxysporum" sounds nice, for example. Quite a way to make "Agricultural High Gen-Tech" a convincing case for being the only viable option for the future, including rebuilding the Amazonas from scratch.
