Save Tonight

The instant Duo was through the door, Wufei knew something was wrong. It had been the Asian's day off, which he'd spent readying a little surprise for his American husband. Romance had not always been his strong point, and he was sure that he'd outdone himself this time, but now he wasn't quite sure that tonight was such a good night for his attempt.
Sighing, Duo let his briefcase fall to the floor, slowly stripping his uniform jacket off overly tense shoulders, hanging it on the coat rack. When slender fingers found their way onto his shoulders, he moaned in delight.
"Have a bad day, love?" Wufei knew Duo was well aware that they both knew something was up. He'd long since learned not to try and hide anything from his beloved. They were open books to one another, anyway.
"You have no fucking clue." Dropping his head forward, Duo allowed himself to bask in the bliss that came with the shoulder massage for a moment, before dropping the five words they both knew meant something really, really, really bad. "Love, we need to talk."
Wufei blinked at the profanity as he worked at the American's tense shoulders. It really had to be bad, if Duo was resorting to such language, which he'd weaned Duo from using quite so often. A feat he was quite proud of, though he'd never say so. When those last five words hit his ears, though, he felt his own shoulders turn into a bundle of tension. "I'd suggest we go to the sitting room, but I'm afraid I've done a bit of rearranging today. Perhaps the den, instead?"
Shaking his head, Duo couldn't suppress his smile. "Show me the sitting room." He replied, straightening his shoulders, turning to face his lover. "You've gone and done something horribly romantic, haven't you?" He grinned at the blush the Asian was sporting.
"Ah, well, I've tried." He replied, and led Duo over to the sitting room.
The coffee table that had been there had mysteriously disappeared, replaced by pillows that Duo was not even aware they owned, all over a black winter blanket studded with silver embroidered stars. The fireplace had a low fire going, casting shadows across the room, and catching on the ice in the bucket near the blanket, the wine bottle, and the two flutes. Nearby, a familiar wooden box, which Duo knew held the best chocolates money could buy, and which was, subsequently, only brought out on special occasions. Wufei'd really pulled the atmosphere off, right down to the lit candles scattered across the room, the dark drapes drawn to block out the sunlight.
Feeling as though he might melt into putty at the sight, Duo turned to his lover, pulling Wufei into a warm embrace. "You could not have picked a better night for this, love."
When the words were whispered directly into Wufei's ear, despite the sweetness of them, the Asian felt an icy fear coil around his heart, threatening to steal his breath away and never return it. "It's that bad?"
The breathless whisper nearly made Duo cringe. "Yeah." He pulled away, kicked off his boots, and moved into the little nest of pillows Wufei had prepared, patting the blanket next to him.

Go on and close, the curtains
'Cause all we need, is candlelight
You and me, and a bottle of wine
Hold you tonight, ah, yeah

Settling onto the blanket, Wufei faced Duo expectantly, even though he really didn't want to know.
With another heavy sigh, Duo ran a hand through his bangs. "Une's sending me out to L2, on a stealth mission. The guy we're after, he's one of the big ones. She's sending me because I'm the best of the best, and even that may not be enough to get my ass out alive." He swallowed heavily. "She won't let me tell you who we're going after, but trust me when I say there is no one else that can even come close to pulling this off." He forced himself to meet Wufei's eyes.
Slowly, Wufei nodded, "She will, no doubt, either try and stifle me with missions, or keep me home for the duration."
Nodding, Duo shifted closer, slid an arm around Wufei's waist. "I leave tomorrow. She didn't damn well tell me until today, either. It's a week long mission." He let the words hang, knowing he didn't have to tack on the 'if I live through it.'
Wufei understood. All too well, he understood, and for the first time since he had joined the Preventers, he wished he never had. Then, he knew, Duo wouldn't have, and this whole mess wouldn't be sitting in their laps now. A mess that he couldn't even see. "Then we should make tonight a night to remember." He slid close, pulling the wine from the ice bucket, pulling out the cork, and filling the two flutes. He held one up in a toast. "To twenty-two years."
"Twenty-two years." Duo smiled softly as he took his own flute, tapped it lightly against Wufei's, and sipped the rich, red liquid. It helped to ease the coil of anxiety that had taken up residence in the general area of his belly button.

Well we know, I'm goin' away
And how I wish, I wish it weren't so
So take this wine, and drink with me
Let's delay our misery

"You know I love you." Wufei smiled, leaning in for a slow kiss, setting his wine aside, and pulling over the chocolates. Sliding off the lid, he pulled a small package of the coveted confection out, opening it. Pulling a piece out, he ran it slowly over Duo's lips, before the American opened his mouth to take it in.
Savoring the chocolate, Duo let his eyes slide part way closed, drawing Wufei into his lap as the intoxicatingly sweet chocolate melted in his mouth. Swallowing it, he nearly purred as he leaned his head lightly on a tanned shoulder. "You know I love you, too." He promptly fed Wufei a piece of the chocolate, doing his best to put the mission ahead out of mind. They had tonight. He intended to make it the best night of their lives, because he knew it very well might be the last one they spent together.

Save tonight, fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight, fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone

That night, they were curled around each other, quietly reminiscing about their twenty-two years of marriage. Antics they'd pulled while dating, presents they'd given each other, and most importantly, they couldn't seem to stop confessing their love.
Sometime just before the candles burnt themselves out in little pools of wax, the wine bottle nearly empty, a slow, sweet desire flooded over them. By the fading light of the fire, they made love, all soft words and gentle touches.
Afterwards, they didn't dare fall asleep, instead, held each other close, whispering again just how much they loved each other. If the night hadn't had such an air of foreboding about it, Duo would have scorned the sickening sweetness of it all, Wufei would have turned up his nose. As it was, though, they felt the need to engage in the unusually sentimental activity.

There's a log, on the fire
And it burns, light before you
Tomorrow comes, with one desire
To take me away, oh it's true

The next morning, despite staying up all the night before, they were wide-awake at the spaceport terminal. Duo, with a small duffel in hand, forced a smile. Wufei didn't bother, simply reaching out to brush Duo's bangs away from those beautiful violet eyes.
"I'll call every day. I promise." Turning his head, he kissed his husband's palm.
Nodding softly, Wufei swallowed once. "I'll be here." Somehow, he'd lost the ability to speak at normal volume, finding himself whispering.
On a whim, Duo pulled his cross from around his neck, shoved it into Wufei's palm, and leaned in to kiss his husband breathless. Breaking the kiss as quickly as he'd instigated it, Duo turned and ran for the terminal doors, before either of them had a chance to say anything more, to make it more painful. He didn't want to see the tears he knew were growing in Wufei's eyes, even as he fought down his own.
Looking down at the necklace, Wufei's legs nearly buckled beneath him. Duo never went anywhere without the necklace. If he hadn't known the mission was a bad one already, he would have known for sure right then. Fighting his tears, he looked up, just in time to see Duo round the corner on the boarding ramp. Running and hiding. That was his Duo.
The thought convinced his tears to leave his eyes, and for once in his life, Chang Wufei did not care that someone other than Duo might see him crying.

It ain't easy, to say goodbye
Darlin' please, don't start to cry
'Cause boy you know I got to go
Oh, and lord I wish it wasn't so

Once he was on the shuttle, settled and buckled in for takeoff, Duo let the tears free. Stinging, burning hot tears slid down his face, eyes tightly closed against the people he knew could see evidence of his grief. He just couldn't bring himself to care, right then, because he felt as though his heart had been ripped from his chest.
Fuck Solo and his no crying rule, even if it had been for their own good.
Fuck L2 for being such a damn hard place to grow up.
Fuck any asshole that had the gall to think less of him for breaking down like this.
And thank God that Father Maxwell and Sister Helen had taught him it really is okay to cry.
A weak sob tore its way from his throat, and he didn't bother trying to stifle it. Father Maxwell always said that death had its signs. Duo felt like death had put a neon sign in front of him reading 'Five Days Left'. He wasn't going to be going home to Wufei, this time. He was going home to Father Maxwell and Sister Helen.
Wufei had taught him that it was heaven, not hell, that awaited them both.

Save tonight, fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight, fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone

The next day the phone rang and Wufei all but pounced on it. "Maxwell-Chang residence."
"Hey, 'Fei." Duo grinned, relieved despite himself to see his husband's face.
The smile that spread on Wufei's lips was pure magic. "Duo. How's L2?"
"Same old hellhole." The reply was oddly affectionate, and he tilted his head to the side. "How's it going terra-side?"
"I'm up to my neck in grunt missions." Wufei's smile turned a tad bitter. "She believes it will distract me from worrying."
"There she and Sal go, playing mom again." Duo gave a sigh of mock exasperation.
"And Barton is no help." Wufei smirked. "Convincing his wife to let him be my partner."
Duo snorted. "I still think Trowa should quit Preventers." A mischievous grin spread on his face. "It's no fair that he can be screwing Une and not get fired for it."
That drew a soft laugh from Wufei. "I think being married to her is why he doesn't, though sometimes I think he does get biased treatment."

Tomorrow comes, to take me away
I wish that I, that I could stay
Boy you know I got to go
Oh, lord I wish it wasn't so

Duo lay in bed, staring at the ceiling of the room he'd been assigned to for the duration of his stay on L2. The dangerous part of the mission, the attempted capture, was that night. It wasn't even noon, and though he was trying to get the sleep he should be getting to prepare for the mission, it was a lost cause.
On a whim, and knowing that Wufei wouldn't be at work today, he got up, headed for the phone.
"Good morning, love." Wufei smiled sadly as he picked up the phone. No one else would dare call their home right now. Most especially not today or tonight. They all knew where Duo was, and why.
"Hey. Couldn't sleep."
"Didn't figure you'd be able to." Tilting his head to the side, Wufei leaned heavily on the desk the phone rested on.
"You couldn't concentrate, I see." Duo noticed the bags under his husband's eyes, and with a pang of sadness, he also noticed that Wufei was wearing the crucifix.
"No." Wufei sighed. "I took today off."
"I'd do the same." Duo nodded.
They spent the day talking, neither one caring that their phone bill would be astronomical that month. L2 was a really long-distance call.
Checking his watch, Duo winced. "I gotta go, 'Fei. Almost time."
Wufei nodded softly, reaching a hand out, brushing his fingers across the screen. "Love you. If you go home tonight, say hi to Nataku for me."
"Love you, too," Duo whispered, nearly breaking into tears at that last line. "I'll remember."
"So will I." Wufei smiled, and somewhere, he found the courage to cut off the call. He couldn't bear to actually say goodbye.

Save tonight, fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight, fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone

Once the call had cut off, Duo allowed himself a few moments to cry, before he forced his emotions to the back burner, and got ready for work. For the first time in over a decade, he pulled on the mask of Shinigami once more. He needed death's strength to face it.
Back on earth, Wufei went out to the expansive garden behind their house, and fell into the kata. In his own way, Wufei did the same thing as Duo, calling upon the things that gave him strength during the wars, and using them now, in his time of greatest weakness. He was open to a blow, he knew it, and he saw a potentially lethal blow coming. He was just struggling to keep that blow from killing him.

Save tonight, fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight, fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone

Hours later, Wufei had fallen into a fitful sleep, just as Duo had entered the dangerous part of the mission. Twisting and turning, Wufei thrashed within the grip of a nightmare, as Duo deftly evaded detection time and again.
Somewhere deep in L2, two shots rang out into a cold silence. There was no yell, no scream, only a series of soft thuds.
Duo had taken out the terrorist.
And the terrorist had taken out him.
At just the moment the bullet tore through Duo's heart, Wufei jerked awake. Sitting up and staring into the darkness of his bedroom, he knew, and with a hand clutching the pain in his chest, he knew how, too. Getting up, he donned his husband's crucifix and went to sit by the phone to wait for the call.

Tomorrow I'll be gone
Tomorrow I'll be gone
Tomorrow I'll be gone
Tomorrow I'll be gone

Half an hour later the phone rang. Wufei stared at it for a long moment, letting it ring three times before picking it up. Une's face flashed onto the screen, Trowa right behind her, their faces grim.
"I already know." Wufei whispered the words, stared at the couple for a long moment. "Half an hour ago. One shot to the heart."
Trowa's one visible eye closed tightly, and he gave a soft nod.
Une swallowed heavily, struggled to find her voice. "Yes. I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault." A sad smile lifted on Wufei's lips, even as tears rose in his eyes. "We knew he wouldn't be coming home to me this time. There was no one else you could send."
"He took out the terrorist." Trowa's soft voice was unusually thick with emotion.
"Good." Wufei nodded, and his tears spilled. Duo had not died on a failed mission. That was good. Maybe it would help lessen the pain, but Wufei didn't think so.

Save tonight
Save tonight
Save tonight
Save tonight

The next day the phone rang off the hook. For what had to be the hundredth time, Wufei picked it up.
The other three pilots had come, Relena, Sally, Une, Catherine, Dorothy, even Zechs and Noin had turned up on his doorstep, offering company and comfort. Strangely, it helped to alleviate the pain in Wufei's heart. Dozens of politicians and celebrities had called, offering their condolences once they'd heard, and Wufei honestly couldn't think of a single person who hadn't called yet.
He looked at the caller ID, and his heart skipped a beat. Duo's cell phone.
"Hello?" Wufei frowned softly. The cell phone in question was so thoroughly locked up that even Heero couldn't hack in to make a call. Only Duo and Wufei knew the password.
The line was silent, no breathing, and no background noise. Wufei hung up, not daring to hope that Duo could still keep his promises.
When the calls continued to come day after day, however, Wufei quickly realized that it was Duo calling, even if he couldn't hear his late husband.
Even in death, Duo kept his promises.
He may have run, and he may have hid, but Duo Maxwell never told a lie. His gravestone said as much.
He also never broke a promise.

Oh, that's right
Save tonight
Save tonight
Save tonight

For years after Duo's death, the phone rang every day with that familiar number, and every day, Wufei picked up, smiling at the silence that greeted him, speaking into it. Those calls, more than anything, made it possible for him to move on, to continue living without his husband by his side. Because even though Duo wasn't there in body, Wufei knew without a shadow of a doubt that Duo was there in spirit.
And when his own time came, on his own mission that he knew would take his life, the night before was filled with a dream, a vivid dream of the night before Duo had left for L2 and his death.
When the Asian crossed over, he greeted Duo with a warm, "You called every day."
"I promised," was Duo's reply as he hugged his husband close, though he had a playful grin on his face. "Though Heero did help, hacking into your phone lines so they'd ring like that."
It wasn't long before Heero joined them, falling prey to the same mission Wufei had.
"You rigged all my phones." Wufei accused with a soft frown, by way of greeting.
Heero blinked, and had the decency to appear somewhat ashamed.
Expression softening, Wufei smiled. "Thank you. I doubt I'd have gotten through the last few years without those calls."
"I knew he always promised to call every day when he was sent away." Heero offered the couple one of his rare smiles.
Looking on, Nataku approved.
