The Belemnites (or Belemnoids) possessed a shell enclosed by the soft body. This was the pharagmocone of which only the guard, a tapered solid structure usually survives. This guard was calcareous and lent itself to fossilization. Early folklore regarded these guards as solidified lightning bolts!
