2004 Field Trip Listings
Things to Bring: Please make sure if you are  attending the field trips to bring plenty of water, a lunch, sun screen lotion,a hat, good boots, a jacket and always make sure to wear pants. Some basic tools to bring along are a rock hammer, cold chiesels, a srew driver, zip lock bags,old news paper to wrap your discoveries, safety goggles and a backpack. If you want to become more specialized, bring a field note book down information about your collecting site. They can be purchased from a surveyors store like Precision Graphics in Cheyenne. Professional Geologist and paleontologist have been using  them for more then a 150 years.

July,  Dougls Creek Gold Panning: One day trip to Douglas Creek in the beautiful Snowy Range Mountains, west of Laramie. Private Claim
August 21, Guernsey,WY: Guernsey is a very old collecting spot and has a great variety of minerals and Paleozoic fossils. Such collectibles as youngite, calcite crystals, small quartz crystals, geodes, agates , jasper, flint and a variety of fossils such as brachiopods, crinoids, corals and trilobites can be found. Note: This area is a State Park and requires permission to collect.
Dates rescheduled DTBD Como Bluff Dinosaur Dig: Various field trips heldthroughout the summer(except July),and into the fall season  to help Dr.Robert T. Bakker collect Allosaurus and Hoplocanthosaurus bones out of a flood sandstonein the middle part of the Morrison Formation and Microsite material in the upper Morrison Formation. This is not a personal collecting trip but you you will have chance to collect common Sundance Formation invertabates for your personal use.
September 11-12th, Wamsutter,WY: Collect freshwater invertebrates, stromatolites and plant fossils out of the Green River and Wasatch Formation. This is a very old collecting site, but still has a great amount of collectibles to offer. Note: 2-day trip. Bring camping gear, if camping out.

                                        Glossary
Morrison Formation: A rock unit which was deposited during the Late Jurassic (150-140Million years ago)  in a flood plain similar to the Mississippi River valley, but more dry. Dinosaurs are extremly common in this rock layer.
Sundance Formation: A rock unit deposited in the Sundance sea during the middle and late Jurassic (155-150 Million years ago). Squid shells and clams are extremly common in this rock layer.
Paleozoic Era: A time period which lasted from 570-220 million years ago.Wyoming was near the equator during this time.
Green river Formation: A rock layer deposited in a series of three great lakes during a time called the eocene (50 million years ago). The famous fossil fish from Fossils Butte Monument are from the Green River Formation.
Wasatch  Formation: A rock layer deposited before the Green River Formation duing the Eocene In a flood plain.
