Field Adventures to Wyoming's very own                       JurassicPark
Last summer the Cheyenne Mineral and Gem Society had the rare chance to work with Dr.Bob Bakker at his dig sites at  the Como Bluffs anticline east of Medicine Bow. Eleven CGMS members participated on the first trip and eight members on the second trip. Our trips to Wyoming's very own Jurassic Park turned out to be a  great sucess and many fascinating fossils were discovered by our members.
On the first trip we visited the Claw Conglomerate  in the upper most layers of the Morrison Formation. Crocodile teeth and turtle shell fragments abounded in this layer. But many other interesting fossils were found by our members, Ceratosaurus teeth, a dinosaur toe bone, Pterodactyl  wing bones, fish vertebrae and a possible seed. Dr.Bob's great scence of humor added comic relief to the long hot hours of digging. This fall Gary Birs, Dr,Bob's curator of reptiles has identified nearly six different species of turtle by looking at the turtle shell fragments  we discovered on our trips to the Claw Conglomerate, one of which was probably almost 100 poundswe are told.
On our next trip twe helped Dr.Bob excavate a sauropod femur(brontosaurus upper leg bone) and a variety of Allosaurus bones out a flood sandstone one hundred feet above the base of the Morrison formation. Our primary work efforts were on the sauropod femur which we plaster jacketed  and made ready for flipping.  This bone, along with the allosarus bones will eventually  find their way to Cheyenne for preperation and display.
We are looking forward to returning next summer and finishing our work on the giant sauropod femur as well as the rest of the bones  in the flood sandstone. We hope that our regular members and our new members will be able to attend this coming summers dino dig at Wyoming's very own Jurassic Park.
