How to make your own Jurassic Park coffee cups

Because the actual cups seen in the movie "don't exist" and are not available even on the internet, EBay, or even Universal Studios for that matter, I made my own.

Not a very hard task.

Basically all you need is a blank cup, some high quality adhesive stock (usually available from any office supply store) and the logo itself.

Note: The cups available on the internet, even the official licensed cups offered by Universal Studios (which have since been discontinued even if you DID want one) are NOT the same as the ones seen in the movie.

There are basically 3 different Jurassic Park logos used in the movie Jurassic Park.

The first and most recognized, the "Alpha Logo" is Black-on-Red with yellow trim. It is used primarily (and first seen) on the Jeeps, tour vehicles, etc, and on the movie box-cover as well. It is basically THE official Jurassic Park Logo.

The second logo (Beta Logo) is Black-on-Yellow, and has a white trim. It is used on the Baseball caps, Lanyards, Alejandro's apron, and THE COFFEE CUPS, which is prominently displayed on top of Nedry's computer in the main control room.

The third type of logo, and in some ways the coolest is the Black-on-White logo with hollow trim as seen on the dinner plates, (Tres Elegant'e).

The logo I chose is the one from the movie, black on yellow.

Step 1. Purchase one or more standard black coffee cups from your local grocery store.

Step 2. Purchase a package of high quality adhesive stock (mailing labels - FULL SHEET) from your local office supply retailer.

Step 3. Print the Jurassic Park logo of your choosing on the adhesive stock. Use the best - highest quality settings available to insure optimum results ("Don't get cheap on me Dodgson").

*Note: Most standard American coffee cups are 3.75 inches tall (3-3/4"). The logo should be almost exactly 3 x 4 inches. This allows for a slight gap between the top of the logo and the top of the cup as seen in the movie. 3x4 inches is the scale I chose for my cup. You can probably cheat on this a little bit, but I wouldn't recommend straying too far from the formula or it might come out looking "not quite right".

Step 4. Using very sharp (brand new) scissors, cut-out by hand the logo. (Wear magnification glasses to insure the utmost in quality)

You can also use an exacto knife, but I find scissors give the best, smoothest edge.

To the naked eye, you probably wouldn't notice the difference, but to a chaotician, the orientation of the fibers, subtle imperfections in the skin, never repeat themselves, and vastly effect the outcome. :-)

Once the logo is cut-out, you can pretty much place it by eye on the cup.

(The cup in the movie appears to have its logo centered on the exact opposite side of the handle, which is fine, but I noticed most real souvenir coffee cups usually have their logos centered to the left or right side of the handle, which is what I chose to do cause it just looked correct.

DON'T ACTUALLY "USE" THE CUP :-)

Don't wash the outside unless a Dilophasaurus hocks a loogie on it.

This is meant only as a movie replica and not as a drinking cup, and for goodness sake don't ever stick your cup in an automatic dishwasher! Not even a real JP one.

I use mine just to hold pens and pencils.

If you must create a working cup, I would recommend you substitute the adhesive stock for transparent plastic mailing label stock. Then maybe gob a big swatch of transparent sealer over it. It's about the same price and more resistant to water.

Coffee just tastes better from a JP coffee cup. More... Primitiiiive!

Cheers!

PS, Don't try and sell these. The Jurassic Park logo is a licensed copyrighted trademark. It is illegal to reproduce it for commercial use. This is just for personal use only, or until Universal Studios stops "holding on to their butts" and un-discontinues the real thing.
