| Just like dance, music in the state has flourished in both classical and folk forms. The credit for this must go to the royal patrons through the ages. The ancient times saw the Pratihars, Koshals, Panchals and Rohillas finding time from their warring priorities to enjoy dance and music. The famous Nawabs of Avadh carried on this tradition and spent a good measure of there time and money on patronising leading danseurs and musicians of their time (maybe a bit too much !). The superhit movie 'Umraao Jaan' was based on the story of one of such courtesans in Lucknow. Modern day exponents like Pd Jasraj, Hariprasad Chaurasia and Bismillah Khan carry the baton. | ||||||||||||||||
| The state is the undisputed home of semi-classical Hindustani music in its various forms - Thumri, Dadra, Kajri, Todi and Qawwali. | ||||||||||||||||
| Folk music also contributes its bit with Krishnaleela bhajans from Braj, melodious songs from Purab (many of which have found their way into Bollywood movies), etc. | ||||||||||||||||
