Languages &  Literature
As mentioned in the Geography section, Uttar Pradesh is blessed with several important languages. In fact official records put the number of dialects at over one hundred! All languages in the state are of the Hindi family and the script used is also common - Devanagari. Apabhransha is supposed to have originated here. The state has also been the seat of the highest Sanskrit learning throughout history. It also housed primary centers of Persian and Arabic learning in India.
Languages of the state have lent their used to undoubtedly the greatest masters of Indian literature. Vedavyas is supposed to have narrated the Ramayana here. The Mahabharata is also believed to have been passed from generation to generation in a later form of Sanskrit and early Prakrit. Surdas articulated his love and devotion for Krishna in the sweet-sounding Brajbhasa and Tulasidas lent his version of the story of the great King Ram in 'Ramcharitmanas' in his native Avadhi. The state's glory and contribution to literature grew exponentially in modern times when it was blessed with such laureates as Premchand, Suryakant Tripathi 'Nirala', Ramdharisingh Dinkar, Mahadevi Verma, Harivanshrai Bacchhan, Jaishankar Prasad etc. Poet Iqbal penned his now-famous 'Sare Jahan Se Achha' in this state and even the ancestors of Rabindranath Tagore were landlords in eastern U.P.
Universities of Allahabad, Varanasi (BHU) and Aligarh, Lucknow were and continue to be some of the greatest seats of higher learning in the country. In fact, they attracted students from all over the world. Even today, institutions like IIT Varanasi, IIT Kanpur, IIM Lucknow, Pantnagar Agricultural University, REC Allahabad, and several other all over the state find thousands of students making bright futures there every year.
