Naturalization Records Found in Michigan for Juntunen Immigrants
By Ruth & John Stierna
On June 28 & 29, 1999, we spent two days at the Keweenaw & Houghton, Michigan, County Courthouses & Copper Country Archives at Michigan Tech searching for Juntunen naturalization records. Fortunately, we were able to get copies made of 82 pages of naturalization papers. The Juntunen immigrants we found had arrived in Canadian, Boston, & New York ports. Twenty-five of these Juntunens are already linked with high probability to Juntunens in the St.Albans ship arrival data listed on this Website.
Many of these Juntunen's ''Declaration of Intent'' papers filed in Houghton County or Keweenaw County, Michigan list name of their ship, date of arrival & port, mode of travel to Michigan, & place & date they crossed into the US. The earliest records from the 1870-80's contain the least amount of information. After 1900, the naturalization records contain increasing amounts of family data. Some have an attached photo of the immigrant.
We are currently creating spreadsheets for the upcoming Juntunen publication that link all Juntunen naturalization records we have found to their probable (or possible) ship arrival record from the various ports. If you recognize your ancestor in any of the published data, you can request a copy from us of the papers we have in copy form. Alternatively, you could write to the governmental record sources that will be included in our publication.
If you have any naturalization papers for your Juntunen ancestors in any place in North America, we would greatly appreciate your sending copies to us to aid in this data project. Please send us copies of documents (not originals) or any Juntunen naturalization information that you might know about from family records or even from oral tradition. Thanks very much for your help as we work toward our publication goal. Our mailing address is: John and Ruth Stierna, 2600 Wiley Terrace, Haymarket, VA. 20169
Assisting with Research for Juntunen Immigrants
The LDS Church has Family History centers in many areas of the United States. If you are interested in researching on your own you can look at the following link for the nearest Family History Center LDS Family History Centers.
At the Family History Center the LDS Church has a disk or microfiche catolog of items which you can obtain for a nominal loan fee to compile your Juntunen Research. Instructions for using this catolog are available on line at http://www.familysearch.org/sg/FSFHLC.html.
We would appreciate any assistance in reaching our publication goal . Here is a listing of the type of information commonly contained in passenger arrival records. The full range of information is often useful in exploring family roots and making connections on factual data. This can serve as a guide on the kind of information to record, if possible, as passenger arrival records are found.

Our new publication name will be The North American Juntunen Journal. Each edition will be numbered & dated starting with Number 1 & date published. The journal will become the communication vehicle to report on the continuing Juntunen research in North America. The first edition will be published in the Fall of 1999. Following editions could then be, hopefully, bi-annual, containing more Juntunen articles, data summaries, genealogy submissions, photo submissions, & stories, etc.
We believe that a journal format would give us flexibility to include various types and stages of research. It could continue as an evolving process as N.A.Juntunens get to know each other better.
