Juntunen Family Book I Arrives

Don't miss out on the opportunity to own a copy of Juntusten suku I osa. It is a landmark work of genealogy scholarship produced for our Juntunen family's benefit by the Juntunen Sukuseura of Finland. A heartfelt ''thank you'' to Kalle Juntunen, Matti Kankanpää, and the generous members of the Sukuseura for all their hard work in making this book available to us. The arrival of Juntusten suku I osa in North America is truly one of our Juntunen family's historic occasions.

The following link to Margaret Smith's web site will give you information on ordering Juntutsen suku I osa link

For those hesitant about the Finnish language text, a list of terms and abbreviations is available to buyers on request to facilitate understanding the wealth of family data presented in the book. This treasure chest of data will be useful to all.

Ships' Passenger Arrival Records for Juntunens

At the turn of the century, the primary means for Juntunens to come to the new world, of course, were steamships. The following table displays selected data on Juntunens that we have extracted from ships' passenger arrival records contained in the St. Albans Index for immigrants arriving in Canadian ports and crossing into the US from 1895 to 1924. This table displays the first group of alphabetized Juntunen records that we will post in the coming months. We will add 30 to 50 Juntunen records at a time to this chart until we have completed posting the approximately 155 records found in the St. Albans index. After that, we will begin posting other records.

Only selected data from the passenger arrival records are shown in the table. The additional data is maintained in the project data base for later use. The information displayed now is the essential material to help families identify their ancestors, together with the arrival data, port of arrival, birth place, age, nearest relative in Finland, and anticipated destination in the U.S. It would be very helpful to the Juntunen Family History Project to be able to identify people in North America that are descendents of each of the Juntunens identified here. If you believe that any of the persons listed here are your ancestors, please take a few minutes to drop us a brief note.

Ultimately, we would like to chart passenger arrival records, naturalization records, and census records from a database for all Juntunens that have come to North America. Together with submitted Juntunen family tree information, such records will help to tell the story of the many Finnish Juntunen immigrants that came to the US or to Canada to establish a home and earn a livelihood in the new world.

The text is presented as shown in the original records. Clearly there are many cases where another spelling or presentation is correct, but the text shown here is solely as found in the original soundex records and is not an interpretation of intent.

Did You Know?

Have you ever thought about your family name. Now the US Census Bureau has one way to check into names as reported on the Census in 1990. For example, go to http://www.census.gov/genealogy/www/freqnames.html and enter the name Juntunen. See what it shows. You could do the same for other family names and compare them to Juntunen. This could also be a fun thing for young people to do in finding out about their family name.

Another interesting site is http://www.genealogia.fi/nimet/nimi24ae.htm where you can see a list of the top 100 Finnish family names in Finland. Try it and see what you can find. Is Juntunen listed? What about other Finnish names among your relatives? What shows up for those names in the U.S. records from the Census Bureau website?

What's in a Name?

One of the first questions we, Finnish-Americans, want to know is "What does our Finnish surname mean in English?" We know that some Finnish surnames refer to landmarks, others are names of farms, and Karelian surnames often are names of birds. What does Juntunen mean?

Juhani Juntunen recently reported more facts are coming to light about the surname Juntunen. A historian of the university of Joensuu, Alpo Juntunen, who is doing some work for the Finnish army, visited some time ago in Russia and met a Mongol colleague. Alpo introduced himself: "Alpo Juntunen" and this Mongol professor said: "You are a hunter?".

So - "Juntun" means in Mongolian "Hunter" and this adds more confirmation to the theory that our ancestors were hunters as described in the Juntunen suku I osa book. (Juntu in Finnish means "hunter's trap path".)

There are in Russian many loan words from the Mongolian language and from there they were brought to Finland by the migration of the tribes from the Urals. So today these words appear in the Fenno-Ugrian languages.
