Sanitary Landfills
The sanitary landfill eliminates many of the problems associated with the simple landfill. In sanitary landfill, the waste are dumped, spread and compacted in a site where there is a natural depression or where the ground is first trenched to make room for the garbage. Each new layer of garbage is covered with a layer of earth by the end of each day. the rate of decomposition of waste material is a sanitary landfill site is slow because there is little or no oxygen.
The ideal landfill site should be constructed well above the water table area where there is sufficient soil for covering wastes. It should be lined with a layer of clay or plastic to prevent toxic chemicals from leaching or leaking out. Monitoring wells should be built around the site so that the ground water can be checked for dangerous chemicals. the methane gas should be vented or collected for use of fuel. A properly constructed sanitary landfill is a better disposal method than a simple landfill. The litter is better contained and controlled; it is cleaner, less smelly and less susceptible to best; and it can be used for a longer period than a simple landfill due to the compaction and layering.
When a sanitary landfill become filled they are covered. this land is sometimes used for housing developments or recreation facilities such as a golf course and parks. Continued decomposition of the buried garbage results in further settling and in some cases the continued release of toxic substances has caused problems for the new occupants of an old landfill.
