Incineration

The burning of wastes is called Incineration. proper incineration reduces the volume of the garbage by 80 to 85% by turning it into ash. True incineration is the burning of all waste materials-paper, glass, metals, plastics and organic wastes. The resulting ash and unburned materials are disposed of in a landfill site.  Incineration can be very simple , such as the Teepee or conical ones seen in the many communities. More complex incinerators use forced air systems to increase burning temperature and special devices on the exhaust to remove air pollutants.

The smoke from the incineration contributes to the overall air pollution of the area. If the temperature of the incinerator is not high enough, toxic chemicals cannot be broken down or may be formed. These toxic chemicals may be concentrated in the ash or released into the air.
