Meiji Jingu
The first excursion that was offered by Sophia University was a trip to the Meiji Shrine. It was the first in a wide variety of field trips that were offered to us. The excursion was fascinating and quite enlightening. The students were also able to witness a preformance of gagaku, something that the average citizen does not get to see. After being blessed, getting a drink of sake, and recieving some yookan from the Emperor Meiji himself (well it was actually given to us by the shrine priestesses, but they said that it came from the Emperor), I meandered around the grounds. There are THOUSANDS of trees here, and they were all planted by volunteers. It is amazing that there is these huge forest in the middle of urban Tokyo.
If someone were to ever ask me what Japan is like, I would show them this picture. A Shinto priest talking on a cell phone. I love it!
