C-ko: Extra! Extra!
C-ko: I'm done for! I'm really done for!
C-ko: Why is that?
C-ko: My secret which can't stay hidden any longer is,
C-ko: ...that the king has the ears of a donkey!
C-ko: Did you say "donkey?"
C-ko: Sorry, not a donkey.
C-ko: The truth is, I am...
C-ko: ...a monkey hiding behind a girl's face!
C-ko: Ah, the shame of it all. Now she'll never get married.
C-ko: Monkey is captured. Monkey is captured.
Someone who's read Hana Yori Dango might recognise the little bit about the King's ears
being donkey ears... I have a feeling that it's a kind of Japanese saying about a secret
that you just can't keep.
As with many of the Nanami-centric episodes, I get the feeling that this play might be
one of the nonsense ones. But then again, though Nanami is frequently comic relief and
acts in very absurd ways, her feelings are never just bunk.
Tsuwabuki, being quite obviously obsessed with Nanami, follows her around all the time.
As such, he knows EVERYTHING about her. He knows what a kind person she pretends to be...
and what an awful girl she actually can be. He's got a secret that he'd LOVE to tell
to anybody, but he won't, because he is loyal to Nanami.
Notice that the monkey-catching robot appears in a number of plays, including the "parasitism"
play and Mikage's play. It is my opinion that the monkeys are the duelists. The robot
varies... in Mikage's play it is obviously Mikage, but after Mikage leaves the robot still
appears. The robot might be Akio at times, or it might be a part of the duelists themselves -
the part of them that incites them to duel.
The robot is very good at catching monkeys. Akio/Mikage/the duelists themselves are very
good at forcing the duelists to duel.
Going back to the play about the fox-girl and the bunny-girl, it mentions marriage. Marriage
is a thing that adults do. For a solid relationship, you first have to have a healthy
self-image - which none of the duelists have. Since Nanami is a monkey/duelist, she cannot
marry. She first must become an adult by "emerging from her coffin."
The Rose Bride also suggests the idea of marriage... though Utena is "engaged", she cannot
marry the Rose Bride until she becomes an adult.
Note: This is the episode that makes you wonder if C-ko is a monkey. The director himself
said that she was a monkey, but I dunno...
