A-ko: Now, my son, stand with this apple on your head!
B-ko: Yes, Pop, but...
B-ko: Well done, Pop!
B-ko: But it was the 37919th already.
B-ko: How long do we have to do this for?
A-ko: Until the doctor stops us, I suppose...
A-ko: Hold your tongue, my son, and stand with this apple on your head!
B-ko: Yes, Pop!
B-ko: But why wouldn't the lord release us after we succeeded once?
A-ko: Don't make me think!
B-ko: Misery! O Misery! What fate is in store for the Tells, as he has become a shooting machine?
A-ko: I wonder, I wonder... do you know what I wonder?
B-ko: Aim a bit higher, Pop...
A-ko: Oops.
William Tell was a (probably mythical) Swiss archer. He displeased a lord by refusing to
remove his hat before the lord; his punishment was to shoot an apple that was sitting
on top of his son's head. If he succeded, he would go free, but if he failed, he would
be jailed.
Tell succeeded, but he was jailed anyway.
Utena never really wanted to duel in the first place, her getting involved was pure accident
(on her part, I'm sure it was all part of Akio's plan). But now she's getting into it, as
she's beaten Saionji twice, as well as Miki, Juri, and Nanami. She's getting cocky.
Suddenly, Utena is confronted with her prince (or, so she thinks at the time). She doesn't
even CONSIDER not fighting him. Utena has become a dueling machine, and will duel anyone
who challenges her, even though she claims that she doesn't want to duel. Even when her
idol, the man of her dreams comes up, she decides to duel him.
...I mean, if what she were thinking about was making Anthy happy, then her PRINCE could
take care of Anthy, right?
The 'lord' (i.e. Akio) won't release Anthy or Utena after just one duel - Utena is to
become a dueling machine and a prince suitable for Akio's ends.
Anyway, so like William Tell the shooting machine, the 37920th shot misses the apple, and
Utena loses the duel.
