Wookie
Wookie is a man riding on the crest of a wave at the moment. With two commercial releases under his belt, and an album due shortly, he's now being sold as the sound of UK garage by the media. However Wookie, though proud to be associated with the UK Garage sound, he doesn't like his music being categorised. Like every creative person, Wookie has absorbed many different influences and created a whole new vibe that is described by the man himself as "new soul".
Wookie, real name Jason Chue, was born as the son of a soundman. He was introduced to the technical side of musical production, when his dad would take him to the studio's he worked in. There he was able to watch Reggae production masters Mafia & Fluxy do their thing. This is where Wookie says he first gained an interest in music.

However, it wasn't till he was made redundant by the architechtural firm he worked for in 1990, that he decided to buy his own keyboard. He had no musical training, but was persuaded by friends to take music making more seriously. He was in his early 20's and raving most days of the week, going to r&b raves, garage raves, drum'n'bass raves and just about any other rave that he could get to.
When drum'n'bass became the medias darling, Wookie was doing the r&b thing, producing Wayne Marshall's track "G-Spot".
But Wookie is under no illusions that he would not be where he was if he hadn't had his talent nutured along by Jazzie B, who stuck with him through thick and thin. Being the type of person person who likes his beats hard as well as his vocals soulful, he began began combining the heaviness of drum'n'bass, with the melodies and vocals of r&b, and in addition to this, upping the tempo to introduce a new pumping sound. Since then, Wookie has remixed tracks from artists such as Whitney Houston, Brandy, Allison Brown, Gabrielle, Angie Stone, MJ Cole, Soul2Soul and Attic Blues, as well as his own tracks " Down on me" and the UK Garage Anthem "Battle". He has also mixed many other UK Garage tracks under hte name of X-Men, and his debut album is due to be released in November. He also recently won awards at the first UK Garage awards ceremon. He was also nominated for best UK Garage Act and Best Producer at the mobos as well.
For me, Wookie is the perfect example of how hard work and dedication can get you to the top.
