This gun is the authors current deer rifle, although the Mauser mentioned below would be his Ideal rifle
      My Ideal Rifle
         By Clyde Murphy

This will be an article to The Hunter; can you say that with me "The
Hunter" it just has a certain ring to it doesn't it?  These three
rifles are my picks if I could have any three rifles, Within reason, for these rifle will be for me The Hunter, not a millionaire doctor, or a professional ball player, but the average John Doe hunter. I'm going to break these down into sections: varmint rifle, deer rifle, and big game rifle

       VARMINT RIFLE

The first that I will describe to you will be my ultimate varmint rifle, within reason to me the average John Doe.

To start with, I will have a Savage Model 112BVSS Which has the
26-inch SS Heavy Barrel, and Heavy Target style Laminated stock. Chambered in the flat shooting, and lightning fast 25-06.  Setting atop this rifle will be a Weaver Grand Slam 4.5-14X40 scope, mounted on Talley rings and bases.
I will have the trigger lightened and tuned to break at a crisp 3 pounds. Also
I will have a Harris bipod attached and the Super Sling II  This is my
Ultimate Varminter.

      DEER RIFLE

This will be my Ultimate Deer rifle, within reason.

At the heart of this rifle will be the tried and true
K-98 Mauser action, rebarreled with a Adams and Bennett Stainless Moly
barrel from Midway USA mail order catalog. The barrel will be chambered
in 308. Win. I will install a Timney trigger, lightened and tuned to break at a crisp 4 pounds.  I will have atop in a Nikon Monarch 4-12X40 scope SS finish to match the Barrel. The action and freefloating barrel will then be installed into a glass bedded Boyds Thumbhole Laminated stock, with a Super Sling II attached.  This is my Ultimate Deer Rifle.

     BIG GAME RIFLE

This will be my Ultimate Big Game rifle, within reason.

Lucky me, I actually already own this rifle! At the heart is the P-14
Enfield action, absolutely the smoothest bolt you will EVER find.  It
has been customized with a accurized Century Arms Int'l 26 in. Blued
Barrel. A Timney trigger tuned and adjusted to 4 pounds. It has a Fajen Walnut stock.  Atop this rifle sits a Shepherd 3-10X40 With the Bullet Drop Compensator for the 300. Win. Mag. on Weaver rings and bases. With yet again the Super
Sling II

The above rifles were my picks for the best quality and value for your average hunter.
The Savage, most accurate rifle out of the box
The ever reliable Mauser, die hard, and unbeatable
And the Enfield, possibly the best action on which to build a custom rifle.
