THE HISTORY OF JUNIOR CHAMBER SEDUAN
(Formerly known as SEDUAN JAYCEES)
FORMATION
Since the beginning of 1979, it has become more apparent that the formation of
another Jaycees chapter in a sub-district of
Sibu to cater for the youths of
the areas that come under the then Seduan constituency as specified by the State
Election Council is necessary.
As the population grew, there were also more and more youths in society. In
April, 1979, a group of youths staying in Sungai Antu approached JC Wong Doh Woo
for a discussion on the availabilities of training facilities for them. From the
brief but significant meeting, it became obvious that an organisation that is
based on Jaycees International concept is by far the most suitable and effective
movement that can penetrate them.
Although there was an initial doubt that Seduan Jaycees may become a
'competitor' to Sibu Jaycees, after much thought, especially after the
delineation of the areas, Seduan Jaycees will however complement Sibu Jaycees in
its youth training facilities and community service.
The formation of Seduan Jaycees will be yet another successful extension
programme of Jaycees Malaysia. The formation itself confirms the awareness(on
the part of the community)of the effectiveness of Jaycees and the Jaycees
movement.
Preliminary discussions held on an informal basis with the Jaycees
Sarawak's President, JC Lee Chung Lee, indicated that he was in favour of the
formation of Seduan Jaycees in the light of the fore-going circumstances.
To ensure that Seduan Jaycees will successfully overcome the usual initial
teething problems that usually beset a new organisation, a few experienced
Jaycees members from Sibu Jaycees namely JC Andrew Tiong Hock Seng, JC Simon
Wong Doh Woo, JC William Lau Hieng Ping, JC Michael Wong Ngee Khih, to mention a
few, volunteered to run the organisation for an interim period to prepare a team
of youths to eventually take over smoothly.
In 1979, Seduan Jaycees was formed. It was approved by the Registrar of
Society and was admitted to JC Sarawak Board in the 24th Sarawak Board Convention held in Miri on
2-10-79.
The Charter President was JCI Senator Andrew Tiong Hock Seng and it had a
total number of 36 members.
