SENSER'S SUFFERS POST-KENNEDY WEDDING LETDOWN;
MASSIVE BAR PERFORMANCE FOLLOWS
By Dan Hinrichs
1998 Spring Intramural Volleyball Champion
ROSEVILLE, MN- The Senser's regulars were back on the field Thursday, and they produced a dramatic 10-9 victory in the first game that Hollywood would be proud of. "This one had it all," outfielder Christian Peterson stated. "Solid pitching, good defense, patience at the plate...it was fun to watch." After a 4-run first, Senser's bats once again decided to go AWOL for a while and let the Bombers back into the game. However, by blowing the lead and going into the 7th down 9-8, Senser's produced that Academy Award winning drama that is normally reserved for Vlade Divac and World Cup soccer players. After a flyout, Senser's got two players on via the error and a third with a walk. Up stepped Pete Fanucci, who promptly drove one to the outfield, scoring Dirksen from third. Denny Hocking followed in the lineup, and for the first time in his career of competitive ball, was intentionally walked. "I really don't know how to react to that," Hocking mused. "I don't know if it was respect for my ability with the bat or their lack of respect for Eastiro, this walk. I mean, it had never happened in 18 years of competitive ballplaying, so I guess you can read whatever you want into it." Eastiro then stepped to the plate with a chance to be a hero...and he worked the pitcher for a game-winning, walk-off walk. "You could see East was soaking up the glory," manager Pete Fanucci said. "Cripes, it took him a good 35 seconds to walk from home to first. After seeing that I know I can smoke him in that footrace." So if you're keeping track at home, that was a 2-run rally without the help of a base hit that gave Senser's the victory. Pitching again was at a premium in the second game, as the teams were knotted at 3 after 5 sweltering innings. In the 6th, Senser's busted loose for 5 runs, which looked like it was going to hold up. But in the 7th, with two outs, thoughts of cold beer, a winning season, and all of the blondes in the stands got to the guys, and Senser's dropped a heartbreaker, 9-8. "Get me the f--k to the bar," Mike Dirksen said after that debacle.
Senser's indeed got the f--k to the bar, and anger amongst the team was very evident. Mike Biebl hinted at his frustration at work, stating, "I want to go in (to work) and f--kin' teabag my boss." Even the normally even-keeled Hocking got into it, chastising Dirksen for giving him a 3/4-full beer. "That's not a full beer, dammit!" Hock yelled at his infield counterpart. "Give me a good Wisconsin pour, law man." The night took a turn (I don't know if it was for the better or for the worse) when the team noticed the server was a student at St. Thomas. "Well, at least there's always a Tommie around to clean up our mess," Fanucci quipped, which seemed to get the team in a better mood. (Word on the street was that the server had a second job driving a bus for Metro Transit.) That damn Tommie also put the hex on the team's tickets that night, as only two of the team's 17 were drawn in the 2 hours of the Senser's Beach Party. "This thing is fixed, dammit! RIGGED!!" Dirksen yelled at the perpetrating waitress. "Don't worry, we'll play later," the waitress replied to Dirk with a wink. The two tickets that were drawn, Ryan Thomas's and Brette Hjelle's, were winners- Thomas with a nice Jim Beam hat and Hjelle with five bucks. Toward the center of the table, Fanucci was busted wearing #1 fan Susan Hansen's purse, which prompted an automatic "yeah Pete, I think you need to get your balls reattached," from Biebl. "Shit," Dirk quipped, "Pete's needed his balls reattached since December 16, 2000." As the night dragged on and the team became increasingly angered at their lack of wheel spins, the anchor table of Dirksen, Biebl, Hocking, Bruns, and Trash began to slow down on the beer consumption, something noted by the Tommie. "Guys, do you want a Tommie to show you how to drink??" the waitress said in passing. Jeff "Trash" Rosner summed it all up beautifully..."Bitchiz, whatcha gonna do."
This week there is no game due to the July 4th holiday. Senser's next game is their final one- July 11 at 8:00.
Swelvax Player of the Week:
Eastiro. Never in the history of Senser's softball has a player had the patience to wait out a walk-off walk, especially after the batter before had already been intentionally walked.
MVMP, presented by Mike Biebl:
Eastiro. Due the fact no one did anything spectacular nor spectaculuarly awful, Eastiro earns this too. A walk-off walk?? The batter intentionally walked in front of him in order to face Eastiro? Honorable mention on the MVMP goes to Jayme Forstrom, who committed the same blunder her beau did earlier in the year- left the bar early and got her name called for the $200 spin. A $200 win would've gotten her back in 1st in the fan standings- it will be difficult for her to defend her title now.
