THE QUEEN IS COMING TO ANDONG

Ji-hae: Hi Bora! How's school?

Bora: It's Ok. Do you know my friend Sumi?

Sumi: Hi Ji-hae. It's nice to meet you.

Ji-hae: Glad to meet you too. Why do we have this meeting?

Bora: We don't know. Somebody said it was important.

Sumi: Dae-young knows why. Oh, here she comes now.

Dae-young: Hi girls! It's a beautiful day isn't it?

Sumi: Yes it is. You're new hair cut looks good.

Dae-young: And, look at my new shoes everybody. What do you think?

Bora: I think your rapidos are nice. (But a little expensive)

Dae-young: Today I took a taxi to school.

Ji-Hae: Why? What was the problem?

Dae-Young: Because the bus broke down.

Ji-hae: Because the bus broke down? You don't live that far from school anyway. Why do you even take a bus?

Dae-Young: Not far? It's one kilometer!

Bora: Ji-Hae, did you remember my notebook?

Ji-hae: No, it's at my violin Hogwan. Is it important?

Bora: Yes, it's very useful. Could you please bring it tomorrow?

Sumi: Can you play the violin, Ji-hae? Isn't it difficult?

Ji-hae: Yes I can, and no it's not difficult. It's easy and fun.

Dae-Young: Do you know that Queen Elizabeth is coming to Andong?

Bora: Yes, everybody knows. It's in all the newspapers, and on radio and television. They will give her a big birthday cake.

Sumi: Queen Elizabeth? Really?

Ji-Hae: What do you think of Queen Elizabeth Sumi?

Sumi: My father studied in London England and he showed me many pictures of Buckingham Palace. I think she's wonderful and kind.

Bora: So do I. Let's go together and see her when she comes, shall we?

Ji-hae: Hmm...a difficult problem. We have school that day.

Dae-young: No we don't. I have interesting news! They need students to give the Queen flowers, and they want us!

Sumi: That's great news!

[two more girls come on the stage]

Un-kyong: Did you hear about it?

Ji-Hae: Dae-young just told us, but I don't believe it.

Bora: Neither do I.

Young-mi: Start to believe. Andong City Hall has chosen students for the Queen's visit.

Un-kyong: And we must learn how to say some English.

Sumi: Really? Do we have to wear special clothes.

Young-mi: No we don't. We will wear our Korean school uniforms.

Bora: Did I hear you say we will speak English, to the Queen of England?

Un-kyong: Yes, you heard me. May I tell what we have to say?

Ji-Hae: Yes please. Is it very long or hard to remember?

Young-mi: No. It's only one sentence, and it's easy.

Dae-Young: Are your ready everbody? Listen to this.

Un-kyong: "You're Royal Highness. The students at Munkyong Girl's Middle School present you with these beautiful flowers."

Ji-hae: That's it? We have to say that?

Young-mi: That's all.

Bora: Oh my God. I don't think I can say that because it's too long. What did you call the Queen?

Un-kyong: You're Royal Highness.

Bora: What does that mean?

Sumi: I think we need to study this more.

Young-mi: Well, you know Queen Elizabeth is from England and she is from a royal family. Because she's so special we must speak to her as "Your Royal Highness".

Dae-young: Why can't we say "Hello Queen, welcome to our country Korea. We hope you will like it here? Do you want some ¾¦?

Sumi: I beg your pardon? I think the Queen is wonderful but I don't know how I find that sentence. Why must we speak English to her and why give her flowers?

Ji-Hae: Yes. There are many schools in Korea and Kyongsanbukdo, so why our'sl.

Bora: And why us?

Un-Kyong: Andong City Hall had a lottery and our names were picked out of a hat.

Ji-hae: Now, I can believe it!

Sumi: I'm going to learn this sentence. I don't know how long it will take, but I can do it.

Ji-Hae: I can do it too.

Bora: So can I, but...

Young-mi: What Mi-young?

Bora: I'm not very good at English. They just picked our names from a hat but they didn't know if these students could speak English well.

Un-kyong: Don't worry. We can help you. Mr. Wilson, the Canadian English teacher in our school will help us too.

Dae-young: Mr. Wilson is very kind. We need him, don't we?

Bora: Oh, all right.

Ji-hae: It doesn't matter if one of us makes a mistake when we talk because we will be speaking together. Nobody will hear the mistake!

Young-mi: If we practice everyday we will get better.

Un-kyong: Then we will have no problems.

Bora: We must always remember to smile too.

Ji-hae: Of course we must show big, bright smiles for a Queen.

Sumi: Can we meet again soon?

Young-mi: Yes, we will all be meeting after classes starting tomorrow.

Un-kyong; Oh, one more thing.

Sumi: What could it be now?

Un-kyong: We get free lunch and dinner at HaeWhae Maul.

Dae-young: This is really exciting. I'm going to write about this in my diary everyday. Bora, you are in the photo club. You can bring your camera and take many pictures.

Bora: Maybe Ji-hae can play her violin, you know, a small concert or something?

Young-mi: Oh sure, Ji-hae, Chong Kyong-hwa, and the Seoul symphony orchestra in concert, conducted by Chong Myong-hun. I don't think so.

Ji-hae: I took first place at the violin festival last year.

Un-kyong: We're proud of you Ji-hae but the Queen is going to hear the Chong trio in Seoul. They and many other famous English and Korean musicians will be playing together.

Sumi: Bora, have you ever met someone famous before?

Bora: No, never.

Dae-Young: I did. I once met Kang-ta after a live concert.

Un-kyong: Oh, dream on, I don't believe you.

Dae-Young: Ask Young-mi. She was with me.

Young-mi: Yes we did.

Bora: Wow, did you say anthing to him?

Ji-Hae: Yes, she said "what do think of my new shoes?"

Dae-Young: There were so many people, crazy H.OT. fans everywhere. But I got in a line early near the stage door and asked him to sign my picture of him.

Bora: Are you being honest Dae-Young? Show me this picture sometime will you?

Dae-young: Sure Bora, no problem.

Sumi: I don't think we can ask the Queen to sign for us.

Un-kyong: No way. A million people ask her every day.

Young-mi: Anyway, it sure will be exciting. Let's not waste any time tomorrow. We must be ready. See you. Bye.

Ji-hae: Bye Young-mi, Un-kyong. See you again.

Bora: I'm going to go with them. See you tomorrow. Bye Ji-hae, Sumi, Dae-young.

Ji-hae: Bye Bora, I will bring your notebook tomorrow Ok? I'm sorry I forgot.

Dae-Young: I have to take a taxi home again. I don't want my new shoes to get dirty. Ha. Ha. See you all tomorrow, bye.

Ji-Hae: Let's go Sumi. Tell me more about your father in London and Buckingham Palace? Did he see Shakespeare?
