UPDATES TO LAST WEEK'S NEWSLETTER
The URL for the Autodesk on-line newsletter should be: http://www.autodesk.com/topcad In the future, we'll try to post URL corrections on the cadonline.com home page as soon as we discover a problem.
Also, several readers reported that they were able to successfully run AutoCAD R14 on prerelease versions of Windows 2000. The lesson here: set up a test station to see if it works for you. |

NO WINDOWS 2000 FOR AUTOCAD R14 USERS
Not-so-good news for those of you who want to run AutoCAD Release 14 or earlier on Windows 2000: those who've tried it report problems caused by 16-bit code in Release 14. Windows 2000 is designed for 32-bit applications, and those that use 16-bit need to be updated before they'll work with Windows 2000. Alas, Autodesk "currently has no plans to test AutoCAD Release 14 running on Windows 2000 Professional." It also sounds like Autodesk plans to fulfill requirements for Windows 2000 logo certification but won't actually submit its products for certification testing. http://www.autodesk.com/products/windows2000/index.htm |

PATCHES REQUIRED TO RUN AUTOCAD ON WINDOWS 2000
To run AutoCAD on Windows 2000, you may need a patch or two. To plot successfully from AutoCAD 2000, you need the appropriate plotting update. Go to: http://www.autodesk.com/support/autocad/index.htm and select your specific product to make sure you get the right one.
If you run a network version of AutoCAD Release 14.01 or 2000, you may get a fatal error when you try to connect to the AdLM License Server. This problem occurs only, but not always, when using TCP/IP protocol for AdLM. To fix the problem, download a new version of the ADESKSYS.DLL file at http://www.autodesk.com/support/autocad/patch2000.htm
Note: Use this file only on Windows 2000 workstations where the TCP/IP Network Version of AutoCAD Release 14.01 or AutoCAD 2000 is installed. Do not use it if you use the IPX (NetWare) version of AdLM. |
