The Protector

Troy Tabor Sr.

Cam Rahn Bay, Viet Nam 1965

My grandfather went to war. He was a very brave man. He fought in the Vietnam War. When he was in boot camp he trained in harsh conditions. He helped save soldiers when he was in Vietnam. During the war he ate canned meat and food. After the war, he continued to serve his country by becoming a Kentucky State Policeman.

He was a policeman for about thirty years. He protected us by catching drug dealers. He worked under cover for many years. He was in very dangerous situations. I’m glad to have a grandfather that worked so hard to protect people. He is still alive and he is my favorite hero ever!

I love you, Granddaddy!

A Trooper

You’ve always been the kind of man

a trooper strives to be

Honest, Trustworthy, Dependable

and devoted to your family.

A trooper’s life’s not always easy

it gets tough along the way

But you’ve lived it with such dignity

throughout each and every day

Many times it would get lonely

going to bed knowing you weren’t there

But outside our streets were safer

as you patrolled with watchful care

681 are just ordinary numbers

to the normal eye

But will always hold such significance to us

as the years continue to roll by

You’ve made our lives much richer

by your kind and honorable ways

and now it’s time for you to rest

and enjoy your retirement days

Lisa Shipley (2000)

Mark had an assignment in school to write about a hero, he chose his grandfather. Lisa wrote the poem, A Trooper, as a tribute to her dad for his retirement.
